While he defenitely has his faults (as any other manager does), I like Lou for the most part and I'd hate to see him leave this early. That being said it wouldn't upset or surprise me if he did, if for no other reason than to preserve his own sanity.

I thought I read somewhere that he has an "out" clause if the team is sold or if the Yankees job opens up. Both look likely during the offseason.

And he will bolt out of Chicago as fast as he can.

I'd be surprised if he left at any point this season, but all bets are off once it's over (which I realize is now, but technically it's in the fall)

I understand the competitive spirit of an ex-athlete, but I am always amazed that so many of these guys are willing to give up a broadcasting gig to go back to being a manager. This is especially true for those guys who are 55+ years old.

I doubt he's back next year.

Everything is lining up perfectly for him to leave. The Cubs owership is going to change, likely bringing about a complete front office overhaul, and what will be an opportunity for the new people to hire their own man. More importantly, the Yankees job is likely to come available, and nobody in NY thinks Mattingly is ready for the job. Girardi may be next in-line, but I think George has been dying to go with Lou for quite a while now, and the fan base would love it.

If he doesn't have an out in his contract, I could see the Cubs new front office people allowing him out of the contract if the Yankees come calling, possibly accepting some nominal player in trade.

I dunno about the Yanks, but I think Lou is in for a one-and-done with the Cubs too. I think the new ownership will probably make sweeping changes.

He took the easy way out today. I wish I could do that.

Beer Jon, and lots of it

Beer? Try tequila.

I prefer whiskey.

My friend Scotch asked to be included in this.

Oh yeah, Lou Piniella

Definitely gone after the season.

I think a more appropriate question is why haven't I quit?

Agreed. I don't see how he will be back.

I doubt Lou quits during the year. It would be really unusual for a manager to do something like that. I haven't minded Piniella too much as a manager. Other than the way he handles his bullpen, I don't have a huge issue with the way he does things.

I suspect the entirety of the front office and perhaps most of the scouting, training, and development people, will be overhauled by the new owner. I doubt Lou sticks around for what figures to be a 2 to 3 year rebuilding phase.
