We need to go get him. Package up Demp and Gooze and send them to the Nats for Cordero. He will be a great closer for a long time, and the Cubs will have the dough to lock him up after his arb contract comes up in '10.

We could shore up the closer situation for the long term, and give us an unhittable closer for the rest of '07.

His walks are alarming this season.

He walked 6 guys in his first 5 innings, and 8 in his next 20 innings. He has struggled a bit this year, which is fine because when his command is back (he is all command) he will begin to dominate like in '05.

8 BB in 20 innings is a 3.6 BB/9. That's not good.

15 of his walks were in his first 15 innings pitched this season when he had other things on his mind and baseball was the furthest thing from being important.

since back from his bereavement leave he has issued 3 passes in 6 IP, which is still not great but definitely better.

dont think he is worth guzman and dempster. could get a lot more for them, and i think guzman will make a fine closer himself one of these days if he keeps on keeping on and stays healthy.

Wouldn't trade Guzman alone for him.

A proven reliever for an unproven reliever? If gooze pans out he still wont be as good as Chief.

Pass. Dempster and Guzman? No thanks you. I'd rather have Dempster, truth be told. Dempster looks bad because he had that crappy game against the Mets and that game against the Cards where he gave up 3. Both of which were non-save situations. Outside of those he's given up only 2 runs all year. He's not as bad as people think. The greatest pitchers in the world have bad games every year. You can't be shut down automatic all the time. We don't need Cordero, and if we're going to replace Dempster with another closer, I'd rather see it done with one of our young promising pitchers like Guzman or Cherry

Not to mention, one good year as a closer doesn't solidify your place in shut down closer greatness.

Please see RE: Worrell, Todd (2003); Mantei, Matt (2003); Cordero, Chad (2005); Williams, Mike (2002)

Absolutely wrong.

this is a silly suggestion -- just silly

I really dont see how it would be a silly suggestion. The deal itself is silly, but having a chance to add a guy like Cordero who is still pretty young would be something to consider.

Why in the world would the Nationals want Dempster. He makes quite a bit especially for a team with a smaller payroll, and it is quite clear the team is going nowhere this year. If the Nationals trade anybody it's going to be for young and cheap talent.

Cordero blamed a lot of his early season play on the health of his grandmother. He said he couldn't concentrate. He even went on the bereavement list for a week to be by her side. Since then his numbers are: 7.0 IP, 3 H, 3 BB, 5 K, 0 ER, 0.00 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 3 SV, 1 H

so to get one mediocre reliever we send two of our best. one of them might be a decent starter one day.

uh, no.

Chad Cordero is mediocre? Please explain.

oh, right, sorry. 1.71 WHIP is worse than mediocre

Thats pretty picky. He has pitched 22 innings (under poor circumstances). His whip over the past 2 years is about .5 better then Demp (Demps been around 1.5). Cordero is so much better then Dempster it isnt comparable.

You people who call him mediocre have not been watching him throw. He has all star calibre stuff, Dempster doesnt. I type this as Demp serves up to fat fastballs, with zero location. Cordero hits spots very well.

actually other than the one game blow up this year, dempster has been very good in save situations saving 11 out of 12 games. cordero is 7 out of 11 in saves. the set up guys have been the problem so far this year not the closer. imo just giving up guzman alone would be way overpaying for cordero.

Gooze is older then Cordero, and COrdero has saved 98 games with a 2.66 era and 1.1 career Whip (this number will improve). He is 25 years old. Unless you believe that Gooze is going to become a legit starter, which is a stretch considering what he has done (and what he has shown), swapping Gooze for Cordero is a great move. There is no way Gooze *becomes* the closer Cordero *is*. No way.

As for Demp? If we could grab Chief without dealing him, then give him a spot in the pen. He can take Howry's slot and Cordero can close for the next 10 years.

since you can see into the future so well can i have the winning powerball #'s?

as for dempster, i seem to recall that when he is not in a save situation his era is over 5 so it would be a disaster to have him pitch as anything but the closer.
