so to get one mediocre reliever we send two of our best. one of them might be a decent starter one day.

uh, no.

Chad Cordero is mediocre? Please explain.

has relied on a low BABIP in the past (not this year, it's a bit high), gives up lots of fly balls and too many home runs for the park he pitches in on most nights. has a high FIP/xFIP. i just don't like him for the long term at all, especially pitching most of his games in wrigley.

Not to mention, one good year as a closer doesn't solidify your place in shut down closer greatness.

Please see RE: Worrell, Todd (2003); Mantei, Matt (2003); Cordero, Chad (2005); Williams, Mike (2002)

You could add an awful lot of guys to that list. John Rocker, Heathcliff Slocumb, Joe Borowski.

Except he was pretty solid in 2004 and 2006 too.

I'm up for the idea of buying low on Cordero, but trading Dempster or Guzman for him defeats the purpose. And the idea that Guzman couldn't reach the level Cordero has been at, never mind the level that he's currently at, is silly.

Agreed.

So how about Murton and Marmol for Cordero and Church? 8-[

That's not a bad deal, but what does it accomplish? Church is essentially a LH Murton a couple years further in his career.

oh, right, sorry. 1.71 WHIP is worse than mediocre

come on, man, that's just stupid. he's pitched 22 innings this year.

2003 - 0.63

2004 - 1.35

2005 - 0.97

2006 - 1.10

1.17 for his career.

it's foolish to compare him to guys like mike williams. he's been very good for his entire career (263 innings) save for 12 bad innings to begin the season.

How about we never trade for a veteran reliever again. Relievers historically have a short shelf life and very often their production drops very suddenly and mostly unexpectedly.

I think you have to be willing to trade spare parts for veteran relievers from time to time. The important thing is to not get into longterm contracts with them, or trade very good prospects. You have to be willing and able to cut bait with guys as soon as they begin to crumble. And you have to be flexible enough to be able to bring in a whole new batch right away.

Brilliantly stated.

i think guys like marmol & guzman have a bright future as setup/closer in the near future. if marmol can find & keep his control he will be devastating for an inning or 2.

when did Chad Cordero become a hitter. Closers aren't necessary for teams that score no runs a game. This team needs walk/strike zone instructors.

When did we give up on Guzman as a starter? Just because the Cubs were stupid enough to move him to the bullpen doesn't mean he can't be a good starter.

that is the least of our worries. Getting on base & scoring runs, horrid baserunning, relief pitching & ability to play defense are the glaring deficiencies....in that order. Oh...and building a team that fits together. Get ready for the lilly/marquis mirage to end. It's already starting to show what horrible signs those were.
