I think we're due for a "Outshined and Raisin are super awesome for the work they put into these threads" post.

Why is Gallagher's info listed?

Oops, bad copy and paste job. Thanks for the kind words.

What an outing for Marshall so far: 6 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 2 K's/1 BB. 79 pitches and 52 of them have been strikes. 10 groundouts to 6 flyouts.

Hoffpauir has a 2-run homer and EPatt is 2/3 with a double. Iowa leads it 3-0 in the 7th.

Marshall retired the first batter he faced in the 7th, but then gave up a solo homer. He then struck out Ricky Ledee, but it was a wild pitch. Randy Wells is now pitching for Iowa.

Not Marshall's final line, but here it is for right now: 6 and 1/3, 3 hits, 1 run, 3 K's/1 BB, 1 HR. 58 of his 87 pitches were strikes and he had 10 groundouts to 7 flyouts.

is marshall next on the list if guzman flames out? would the cubs really go with 3 lefties in the rotation? if guzman can pitch well until the AS break and marshall can stay healthy maybe they should consider trading z after all.

I'm thinking Miller, Marshall, and Marmol are our options if Guzman falters.

Let's just hope that Guzman will pitch as effective as he did yesterday so we won't really have to worry about that. I think the organization knows that Miller is done, so I'd probably say Marshall would be the next guy in line.

Iowa won 7-1. Wells pitched the final 2 and 2/3's only allowing 1 hit and striking out 4. Fontenot had a 2-RBI double in the 9th to break the game wide open. The top four in the lineup (Walker, EPatt, Fontenot, and Hoffpauir) went a combined 8 for 20. Kinkade was 3/4 with 2 RBI's as well.

Miller's out of the equation. He's already proven he can't do it. Marshall and Marmol would almost certainly both get chances before Miller gets another. Besides, I think it's a moot point anyway. Guzman's start yesterday, along with his earlier relief outings, certainly has earned him an extended chance.

Just heard that about Marshall. Also, from what I heard, the HR was very wind-aided and may have gone off the glove of an OF.

Great news though! I hope he can return to April '06 form.

fontenot is another guy who should be on the 25 man imo. now that there is little question that theriot can start in the majors, maybe the cubs should try to trade derosa along with jones.

If Fontenot were a major leaguer he wouldn't have been passed on by all 30 teams when he was outrighted. There's not one single team that thinks he's a major leaguer; I can't imagine 32 teams being wrong.

Guys have slipped through such cracks in the past before going on to contribute to a major league roster. This isn't a perfect market.

Was trying to come up with something witty about 32 teams being wrong. Maybe the Cubs count three times? :)

Not only was he outrighted, but teams passed on him in the Rule 5 too.

i don't understand why it's a big deal if the cubs have three lefties in the rotation. teams have 4-5 righties in the rotation all the time and no one says anything about it.

There are more right-handed hitters in most (all?) lineups than there are left-handed hitters.

The NL hit .265/.340/.426 against LHP last year, and .264/.332/.428 against RHP.

What matters is who is the better pitcher, not if you have too many LH, or not enough.

Weird. I always assumed that with there being so many more right-handed hitters than lefties, that LH pitchers had a rougher time.

I agree that you need the better pitchers in the lineup, regardless of whether they throw with their right arm, left arm, or if they kick the ball up there, but does that even need to be said? I can't imagine anyone disagreeing.

It could have something to do with on average that left-handed hitters are better than right-handed ones:

NL pitchers against LHB: .271/.348/.442

NL pitchers against RHB: .263/.328/.424

The fact that left-handed pitchers can get out more frequently the side that has the better hitters might help negate the disadvantage they have from facing so many right-handed batters.
