I was just thinking this while watching him homer today:

When (if) he hits the one to put him in 1st, are we looking at the most expensive ball in history? Worth more than McGuire and whatever the BoSox winning ball went for? I see we've got them at home in July; might have to grab some bleacher tickets for the small chance to come out of that scrum with the money ball.

I expect to see Bonds get intentionally passed an awful lot as he inches closer to the record. Can't imagine what pitcher would want his name assoicated with Bonds on the all time home run record.

Yeah, some poor sap will have that honor. Hope it's not a Cub.

come on, you know it will be.

It seems like it always is.

Barring injury (which is entirely possible) there's no way it takes him until mid-July to break the record.

I believe it won't fetch as much as McGwire's for a few reasons:

McFarlane says he's out of the HR ball business, so he won't be around to overpay

Bonds is pretty universally hated, and is still potentially involved in several investigations

Aaron is pretty universally respected

The perceived value of the home run has dipped since all the steroid talk began

Of course, I could be way off, but I don't think people will hold Bonds' record in very high regard.

Ken Cub I think you are letting your hatred of Bonds cloud you judgement here. The home run record is the most valued record in all of baseball. No matter what people are going to pay for that ball.

It'd be the ultimate act of "**** you" to Barroid if someone threw it back.

I certainly wouldn't. My love of money trumps my love for the purity of the game, sad to say.

Haha. That reminded me of the game a year or two ago when the guy caught a HR ball, put it in his pocket, and took out another to throw on to the field all in one motion in like 3 seconds. Like he somehow was expecting that to happen.

Worth to the world? Probably quite a bit. I'll go $1mil

Worth to me? Exactly 0 dollars, since I don't accept that Barroid will be breaking the record for real.

I don't hate Bonds. I don't care about him enough to hate him. I think he's a hate-filled, self-absorbed boor with a victim complex, but I personally don't care about him either way.

I do think, however, that the home run itself has been devalued by the steroid clouds, and I think that (along with the fact that many people DO hate Bonds) will drive the price down.

I think if we were talking about Griffey or Rodriguez, the ball may fetch a little more money than I believe it will.

Someone will pay for the ball, I'd just be very surprised if it got anywhere near what McFarlane paid for McGwire's.

I think Bonds has already gone on the record stating that if he's close to the record while on a road trip he will wait until the Giants return to SF to eclipse the HR record. Classic weasel that he is, he won't have to be showered with "boo's" and instead be serenaded by the delusional SF fans.

I'll be in the bleachers for one of the Giants games in July. Hopefully he won't be close so he plays and we can all deride him for the loser that he is.

That's not surprising. I'm sure there's a ton of pressure by the Giants management because they brought him back this year for Bonds to break the record in San Francisco. The only other place I could see Bonds breaking the record is in Oakland. Other than Oakland and SF, I don't see him breaking it anywhere else.

I'd throw it back.

I'd be more inclined to hold it. Then tell everybody that if I got enough donations (it could probably be six digits), I'd destroy it in some fantastic way with news cameras present for all the world to see.

That way, you get the money, and then you rub it in Bonds' face that nobody likes him.

That would be my idea as well.

I definitely plan to go to a couple of those games in July (it's a 4 game series). If I can't get tickets, Sheffield here I come.
