Second round, we take a running back (after taking a running back in the second round last season) who put up 3.5 yards per carry at Arizona. I realize there are a number of Pac-10 fans on the board that may take exception to this, but the Pac-10 defense is not generally the strong suit of the conference. And Chris Henry managed 3.5 yards per carry in it. Jamal Lewis carried for that and people are calling him old and washed up - at 26 years old. Doesn't bode well for Henry.

.

Last year in the 2nd they balked on Devin Hester, at the last minute.

Not a good round for them of late.

I'm glad we balked on Hester. I know he's beloved here and it's basically blasphemy that I wouldn't want him  , but where we were last year he would have brought little to us.

We still had Pacman who is probably nearly or as good as Hester returning the ball and I don't know that Hester would be better at corner or receiver than what we already have. Therefore, I'm surprised that we didn't take him. We seem to like taking people who aren't significant upgrades to what we already have.

Just thought I'd give my feelings on the Titans horrible day.

To sum it up quickly: It sucked. In the first round with very good wide receiver Robert Meachem and also very good defensive end Anthony Spencer sitting there who do we take? Michael Griffin. Not the best player at his position (Reggie Nelson was) and that position WASN'T EVEN OUR BIGGEST NEED. Most opinions I heard on him after the pick? "He's too stiff," "I'm surprised the Titans went for this safety."

Third round. Oh, the third round. Charles Johnson, a good defensive end, Jonathan Wade, a very good CB, Johnnie Lee Higgins, a productive WR, were all there plus other good players and we take Paul Williams. A non-productive player at Fresno State. Great. He has all the tools, but he did next to nothing his senior year at Fresno State. He's no better than Courtney Roby, Roydell Williams and Brandon Jones who we have at receiver now. Why take him? We needed a receiver sure - but we needed an impact receiver that could be a #1 type of guy (Robert Meachem would have fit the bill perfectly, too bad he wasn't available when we picked - oh, wait  he was  ).

So yeah, I am extremely unhappy with our first day picks. Two of our three picks were high talent, zero production guys (Henry and Williams) and the other was the second best player available AT HIS POSITION. I just hope Mike Reinfeldt can pull a Floyd Reese and have a great second day. Probably not, I'm in a pessimistic mood right now.

I agree entirely. They have a very good history of good drafting. I don't know what happened this year. It was terrible. I got all excited for Meachem, and when they announced the selection of Griffin, I swore loudly and threw a pen across the room in frustration. 2nd round they could have rebounded with Smith, but no, they took a RB who did nothing during the season. Such a crap pick. I hope Vince has fun having no one to throw to next season. Overall, I was thoroughly disgusted.

I'm very pleased with the Cowboys' first day. We picked up Anthony Spencer to go along with DWare in the first, WP is gonna have fun with those 2. We wanted him at 22 and were able to get him at 26. Then we picked up James Marten in the early 3rd. At first I wasn't so sure about this pick, but BC lineman always do well in the NFL and Marten can play every position on the OL. We've still got 2 fourth rounders, 2 sixth rounders, and 3 seventh rounders and we've got a potentially top-10 pick from Cleveland in next year's draft. If we can pick up a WR, NT, and DB tomorrow I'll be extremely happy with our draft.

I'm pleased as well. I wasn't too enamored with Spencer, but if that's who they targeted, they did a nice job getting their guy while stockpiling an extra first tounder for next year.

I like the pick of Marten as he gives us depth at OL and he'll have at least a year to learn the scheme and bulk up some.

I'm just so elated about getting Cleveland's first rounder that it really didn't matter much who we picked.

Looking ahead to next year really excites me. Here's just a few players that we could have a choice of next season:

Brian Brohm QB Louisville

Glenn Dorsey DT LSU

DeSean Jackson WR California

Mario Manningham WR Michigan

Franklin Okam DT Texas

The biggest problem I had today was that coming in, we had talent and depth at almost every position. What we are missing is impact players. Guys that can make an immediate difference. Is that Paul Williams, Chris Henry and Michael Griffin? In my opinion, no.

They are depth players you take when you are tweaking an already good team. We need impact guys. We need a #1 receiver, not depth. We need a feature back to take some pressure off LenDale, not a developmental project. We need a stud safety, not a good, versatile guy that Vincent Fuller or Courtland Finnegan will likely develop into. The only position I liked drafting for depth in was corner - hence my preference for Wade - and we didn't even TAKE a corner.

I'm very confused about this front office's priorities. Do they think we're on the brink of contending? Because we simply aren't, especially after this highly dissapointing offseason. I want to trust that Reinfeldt knows what he's doing, but he has no track record (like Polian or Angelo) to fall back on.

McFadden is clearly the best player right now, but I'm not ready to concentrate solely on him. Flo will be a FA after this season, and any one of Gaither/Long/Baker could turn out to be franchise LTs. I would be really pleased though if we are able to get a good season out of Julius and then let him walk and get a high comp pick for him, then grab McFadden with the Browns' pick and an OT with our pick.

I like the Bazuin pick. Would have preferred Pittman to Wolfe too. I think Pittman will be a good one in the NFL.

Okwo stood out the past few years when I watched a Stanford game (I think I've only seen USC, UCLA and Cal play Stanford though, so not too many games). I think he would have been there in the fourth round, though.

Things I learned today:

- Apparently being the face of ND football is more than enough by itself to knock a great player down NINETEEN spots from where he could've and should've been taken. Cleveland got ass-lucky.

- Carolina doesn't always do what I want them to do. I wanted them to take Quinn at 14, then after they traded down, I wanted Greg Olsen at 25. I'm not a Beason guy, but considering our office's record of draft success, I can't complain too much. And they went out and had a fantastic 2nd and 3rd round getting Jarrett, Kalil (who I wanted with the pick they snatched Jarrett with), and Charles Johnson. All they need to do now is take a token ND guy on day 2 and me loves the draft.

- Miami is galactically stupid. A KICK RETURNER AT THE NINE SPOT?

- The Bears getting Olsen is the 2nd-biggest steal of the draft behind Quinn at 22. For a while I was terrified - TERRIFIED - that they'd trade up, get Quinn, and become an NFC dynasty. Olsen worries me less - but only slightly less.

- San Diego had a terrible first day. Craig Davis, a guy who was nowhere near the top of the boards at the time he was picked? Trading half your picks to get Eric Weddle?

- SF had the best 1st day overall - Willis is going to be awesome and Joe Staley was a great pickup, plus they got a 1st rounder back in a trade with Indy.

IMO the best drafts of day 1 are between:

Cleveland- Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn, and Eric Wright

Minnesota- Adrian Peterson, Sidney Rice, and Marcus McCauley

Atlanta- Jamaal Anderson, Justin Blalock, Chris Houston, Laurent Robinson

San Fran- Patrick Willis, Joe Staley, Jason Hill, Ray McDonald

He IS that good. Explain to me in rational terms why he's not. Nothing about "big games", because that's crap (Russell crapped the bed in his team's biggest game in 06, why does nobody bring THIS up?).

I originally called Cleveland as an 07 playoff team, but after allowing myself some time to think about it, I'll pull back slightly. They'll be a .500 team.

The other two ND guys were both taken higher than I thought they'd be, but Abiamiri is going to be a good one, Eagles fans will like him. Ryan Harris sucks.

He is good, but I don't think he's gonna be a stud QB. I can't give you a great explanation of why, but obviously there's something there if 21 teams passed on him. The Jags certainly don't have the QB position locked up past this year and they didn't take him. That tells me something. These scouts and coaches get paid a lot of money to make these decisions and if 21 teams went with other players, then that's enough for me. The Dolphins had John Beck rated "slightly higher" than Quinn. So they got a player that they think is slightly better, for half the price. Not bad. I could explain to you about how I don't think he has the accuracy to be a star QB, but it would be pointless. You probably won't change your opinion and I won't change mine. I'm gonna go with the scouts and coaches that put Quinn through all the workouts and tests and made a decision that he wasn't worth a pick in the top half of the first round.

I agree. Wolfe had an impressive college career, but his stature and overall tools might not translate to the NFL game. He's a lot shorter in person than I thought. I think the Bears were right in taking a player from Northern Illinois, but they took the wrong one.

Interesting that Angelo went with speed over a little more size in Pittman.

Still need some OL help.

I don't find that suprising at all. Pittman would be a worse version of Benson, and APete has some bulk too. Why draft duplicate players?

Pittman is a very different back vs Benson. More of a slasher. He was held back at OSU because T. Smith ran alot with the ball. I think he is gonna be a stud in the NFL.

Yeah, completely different. Benson's what 225-230? Pittman's 207, runs a 4.4-4.5. He's a completely different type of back.

I'll give the benifit of the doubt on the other Bear picks, but Wolfe over Pittman is just not logical IMO.

It appears that other NFL teams...disagree with you and agree with Angelo.

I mean, I rooted for the Buckeyes, and Pittman's one helluva player, but listing him at 207 is actually a bit high. He played at about 190. So in reality, he isn't much heavier than Wolfe.

Sounds like the Bears were interested in Anthony Gonzalez:

The pick itself came with a bit of bouncing around. The Bears had moved up to No. 37 from 63 by trading Thomas Jones to the New York Jets. With receiver Anthony Gonzalez off the board, the Bears then traded back down to No. 62, adding two picks this year and one next year from the San Diego Chargers while still getting an athlete they consider to be a true playmaker

He's good, but I think the real sleeper out of OSU is Roy Hall. He could be very good for some team willing to give him a year or 2 to fully develop.
