According to The Score, Piniella says Murton isn't playing because he has a stiff back.

Hmm...just like Miller I'm sure.

How convinent

Yeah, what you didn't hear is that he has a stiff back because Lou hit him with his car yesterday.

Ohh...I wanted to do something with that quote, but I better not...

 You all know what I'm thinking....

LOL, maybe it's true. Lou doesn't need to offer any excuse for why someone isn't in the lineup...

Just like how Miller was throwing long toss with no problems yesterday even though he had "back spasms."

That's different. They had to come up with a problem to put him on the DL. Again, Lou doesn't need an excuse for Murton not being in the lineup. If there is a doubt, the media will certainly attempt to talk to Matt directly.

Yeah, there's no real reason to lie in that situation. You have very little benefit, and a lot to lose if the media asked Murton about his back and he said that he didn't have back problems. I see no reason to not believe them here, although I don't believe them about Miller (there though, they had incentive, and the player had incentive to agree to go along with the lie).

good, we have another excuse to use when Murton doesn't play for two weeks. I'm sure he'll be in the starting lineup once he heals up. :^o

Sorry if this is not topical,

I'm going to defend Lou a little here. I think he's tried and is still trying to make this team better, but like I wrote yesterday, he is a chess player who was given too many bishops and not enough castles. He can move these guys around all he wants but at the end of the game he still can't get them in a positon to win, becuase he never had the right pieces to begin with.

I think Lou wants SLG out of the outfiled. That is traditionally where a teams gets it. That's why Murton is sitting. I don't think he recognizes that the Cubs need to get guys on base. He's a traditionalist, just like Hendry.

Similarly, "you gotta' be strong up the middle". Izturis has a repuation as a golve man. That's why he's playing. A tradionalist through and through.

But I think Lou can be swayed by results. Let's just hope it is soon enough.

That's rationalizing his decision, not defending it. Just because there is traditionalist logic behind his moves doesn't mean they are justified.

I agree. I was just responding to the criticism of Lou at this point. I hope Lou can overcome his history and begin to see what the problems are and where the solutions lie.

I've never heard of a team losing a rained-out game before.... think the Cubs could find a way to lose this if it does?

I'm sure they will, I've learned never to underestimate this team.

It would benefit the Cubs greatly to have Theriot demonstrate that he can play shortstop adequately.

As such, I expect him to commit three errors today.

In fairness to Lou, I think he is showing now that he has the ability to change in midstream. Bruce Miles just said that Lou thought, in Spring Training, Theriot played best on the right of the infield. Putting Theriot at SS proves that he understands that Ryan's bat is needed in the lineup and that Izturis has been under performing both on offense and defense.

The way it's being presented on WGN, it appears that SS is Theriot's to lose now.

Good god I hope so...
