It is about time the Cubs play the youngsters and find ways to get rid of guys like Jones, Floyd, Miller, and Izturis(even though we have no one to replace him).

The Cubs need to be playing Pie, Murton, and Theriot at CF, RF, and 2B. DeRosa can be the super sub who who plays both infield and OF. Floyd can be the big bat off the bench. Unfortunately it appears like we are stuck for the time being with Izturis at SS.

You have to give Hendry some credit so far when it comes to the pitching staff. It looks like both Lilly and Marquis are meeting the organizations expectations. Soriano will help the team in the long haul. The only problem with his offseason was that he wanted proven quantities to fill CF, 2B, and RF, if the unproven players who have lots of potential can't perform. Of course by doing this you put un-needed pressure on the young players to perform and you make older players who deserve to start on numerous other teams angry when they do not play. This was not the way to build a team.

With all that said if you aren't going to let the young guys develop please trade them when they have value and before they get past their primes. I believe both of them are like 26,27, or 28. I'm sure numerous teams would be happy to take Murton and Theriot. Heck I"m sure teams like Toronto and Oakland will kill to have either of them.

Excuse my little rant I am just extremely frustrated.

Understood.

I think several factors are at play here:

1) Lou & Hendry won't concede anything until at least June.

2) It's supposed to be a $100 million juggernaut. The expensive vets therefore play over the younger, cheaper guys because of the cash outlays

3) Can't trade Jones, don't want to trade Murton. That's the reason for the glut in the OF.........I think eventually Hendry's going to have to give in and trade Murton. Which means, yes, we're stuck with Jones because nobody wants him.

4) No SS. There never was a SS. And there was never a serious attempt at a SS. It's a terrible, terrible black hole right in the middle of our infield. Plus, there's really no chance at getting a passable SS unitl it will probably be too late. I guess we should just play Cedeno.

Sportsline has us ranked number 28:

Another year, a lot of money spent and still the same old Cubs. If not for the emergence of Rich Hill (3-0, 0.41 ERA), we could make a case this is the most pitiful team in baseball. It could be anyway, because of the false hope.

Seems about right.

Anyone who has studied this team over the last several years should have seriously questioned how good they could be.

It's a long season and strange things can happen. I could see the Cubs going crazy and winning the division with a .500 record.

Thank you Jim Hendry for another year of futility. Never ceases to amaze me how that fool still has a job.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Milwaukee will finish significantly over .500. Maybe not 25 games........say 10-15 games over. They're raping the Central right now, top to bottom.

One of the worst Cub teams of my lifetime.

An absolutely horrible collection of bad and overrated baseball players.

Obviously you were not alive in the 70's

Oh, for the days of Steve Swisher, Jerry Morales, and Ivan DeJesus.

Now that was some baseball.

Bah. This team will come around soon. Over .500 by the end of May, that is my pick.

So it'll take another month to make up 5 games?

As long as Izturis is planted firmly on the bench, I think that is possible.

Steve Swisher fathered Nick Swisher.

There are 32 games between now and the end of May. If they are 27-26 going into June 1, I think I'd take it. That's 19-13.

Steve Onteverios was on some of those teams with Dick Tidrow.

I wish I knew who those people were.

Hopefully not, I just thought it to be wiser to set the timeframe out to a month rather than get angry if the Cubs didn't make it up in 10 or 15 games. Getting to over .500 heading into June would not be a bad position at all given a 7-13 start. But I guess people have varying levels of patience.

I really wish this season wasn't over.

I know, it was just getting good, too. 5 out of 6, Soriano heating up, Lee on fire, the starters going good. Oh well...

I loved those late 70's early 80's Cubs teams. They were my first exposure to baseball and my life long obsession with Cubbiedom. Thanks Dad! Now my expectations are so low it doesn't take much to make me happy!

I still cry for 84' and have bad dreams about Leon Durham.

On the other hand I have a baseball signed by each and every member of the 83' team (Ryno included; I also have a ball signed by Ryno).

And I am glad this season is already over....oh wait....

This team is one of the worst assembled teams I've ever seen. Maybe tomorrow I'll do the math, but it wouldn't suprise me if we are spending more money per win than any team ever. Maybe some of those Mets teams beat us. I'm assuming the Yankees are going to end up in the playoffs.

Anyway, regardless of the bungled payroll, this isn't even the worst team of the decade. Remember 2000? In 1999, our opening day pitcher was Steve Trachsel. Relax - this team is easily average. We might even win the wild card! We have fun, talented players. It could be way worse. And soon our luck in the draft will have to turn around.

I'd bet the Yankees are paying far more per win right now than are the Cubs.
