He got in trouble like normally, you know, he always gets in trouble, and finds a lucky pitch to make to get out of trouble, you know," Cardinals start Albert Pujols said of Marquis, who is slated to get a World Series ring when the Cubs visit St. Louis next week.

He probably didn't mean to sound like a jerk RE his former teammate, but he kind of does.

Thats pretty much the most rude thing I've heard come out of a ex-teammate's mouth. Thats pretty darn harsh right there.

Marquis does suck, though.

BTW, I love that Marquis is getting a ring even though he didn't make their playoff roster. I don't know why I'm cool with Frank Thomas getting one when he wasn't on the playoff roster in 2005 and not Marquis getting one.

Maybe because Thomas is a future Hall of Famer and Marquis is a future "Among worst ever"

Pujols is a classy guy. I know this b/c the media tells me so.

I also know that Cards fans are the best in the world, and Joe Morgan is a knowledgeable baseball analyst.

Seriously, Pujols is a joke. He's looked very good so far this year and Pujols should man up and tip his cap to Jason. This just makes Pujols look like a clown.

Among the worst ever? I'm going to go out on a "limb" and say not even close.

Pujols will probably end up as the best player of all-time, but for this season, he should shut the *bleep* up until he gets over the Mendoza line. We can talk crap about Marquis, you can't.

Apparently, I need to fix the word censors...

Pujols sounding like a jerk? No way!

He's probably just sour that A-Rod is having a better start than he is.

Just a completely arrogant statement. I love it when morons do this because they're, inadvertantly, making themselves look even worse when they say this.

Yeah, Albert. He shut you guys down by getting away with some "lucky pitches." What does that say about your offense as a whole, especially you, by not hitting a guy that is getting "in trouble?"

I really hate the Cardinals.

Probably because Thomas seemed like he was putting a ball in the seats everytime he was up in 2005 while Marquis had an ERA of over 6 last year.

The Pujols quote was discussed in the game thread - it should be noted, in fairness to Pujols, that the full quote included some props for Marquis:

He mixed it up pretty good today. He threw a lot of changeups. ... He was keeping the ball down and that's why he was successful

Too bad it wasnt Edmunds. Because if it was this board would have a real good time with a thread title like that.

Albert sure can really sound like jerk sometimes.

He's right though, Marquis' indicators have been very mediocre and if he pitches like this all year his ERA will be around 4.50 which is better than I would have expected. 5.3 K/9, 3.8 BB/9 are not very good stats and he's not going to continue to give up 0 HR's or strand 80% of all runners. He's also had DER of .769 which isn't going to continue.

Of course saying that to a reporter does show a lack of class even if he's right.

Not yesterday though. 5/0 K/BB in 7 IP and only 1 baserunner per inning(with no XBH).

True, I attribute that more to the fact the Cardinals lineup is pretty terrible :).

Here's the whole quote:

Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols said Marquis threw more change-ups Saturday, especially to righthanded hitters.

"He was all over the place like sometimes he can be," Pujols said. "But he was keeping the ball down.

"He got in trouble. He always gets in trouble," said Pujols, smiling. "But he always finds a lucky pitch to get out of trouble, and obviously that was the case today. He mixed it up pretty well. He was keeping the ball down, and that's why he was successful."

While Pujols said Marquis had made a "lucky" pitch, he did not mean to suggest that Marquis was lucky.

"I wouldn't say lucky," Pujols said. "He trusted his off-speed and had a good plan with that."

that certainly mitigates it some, though the opening half--"He got in trouble, he always gets in trouble"--still isn't the coolest thing to say.

Like I said originally, I doubt he intended to sound like an A-hole, but he ended up doing it anyway.
