The Cubs put the tying run on second in the 14th when Daryle Ward's wind-blown popup dropped into center for a double. Jason Marquis was inserted as a pinch-runner by "assistant manager-for-the-day" Cliff Floyd. Because the Cubs were out of position players, Marquis would have played first base in the 15th if the game had been tied up.

"I told Floyd to figure it out," Piniella said. "That was his job."

Floyd said he chose Marquis because of his athleticism, but wasn't really sure why he was asked to make the decision.

"I was just sitting down there chilling," Floyd said, "hoping we'd win this game."

Huh?

I love it to be honest with you. You know what--if they do by some chance tie the game and he has to go in it would be the most entertaining thing I have seen in a long time. I just like that Lou has the nuts to try it. If there was a well hit ball right at an outfielder and Marquis scores when Ward could not have--we would all be praising him. Good for Lou--have guts and fun and have the confidence to take a risk at the expence of being second guessed.

Just the perspective of me!

Wait, what? This is real? I saw it on HJE(although they extrapolated it to "Lou resigns, Floyd takes over") and thought the whole thing was a joke.

I have no idea. Bors and Bernstein mentioned it this afternoon and I tracked down the article. I was wondering if it was a joke or something.

My guess: Lou's helping to foster leaders in the clubhouse; he said during ST that he would speak to several guys about being vocal leaders. Floyd made the right choice but that doesn't mean that Piniella wouldn't have overruled him if it was off the mark.

It might seem far fetched but I think there is a calculated method to Lou's madness. Lou sees Cliff as a leader and someone who can make good quick decisions. I saw a Cliff Floyd interview on CSN, following the first Padres game; After Soriano got injured, Floyd said he rushed into the clubhouse to get his glove so that he was prepared to go into the game quickly. He was also wearing his spikes (even though he had been told he'd have the whole day off).

It might seem like the obvious move for any player but I think it's fair to say that a lot of guys would have been immobilized by watching Soriano get injured... I also think that decision, coupled with some of the heads up plays we've seen Floyd make on the bases, exemplifies his ability to quickly assess a situation and make the right move (maybe a stretch but I think they are related and that's why Lou chose him).

What do you not understand about size restrictions? My advice: abandon doing the avator if you keep failing at it.

Sounds like an April Fool's Day joke. If true it's awfully odd behavior on Lou's part. I'd prefer Lou to be less wacky or free-spirted or whatever you want to call it and just do the job he's paid to do.

I don't care who made the decision. Fact is, it's April 18th and we're already using pitchers as pinch hitters.

Make no mistake, this team is in total disarray.

In a 14 inning game...

and it was a pinch runner.

Anyway, these things happen in 14 inning games. Just be thankful that Theriot (best comparison to Doug Dascenzo?) didn't end up pitching
