He will be a FA after 2007 but

He will not set a deadline for a new deal.

He's also thankful for the having the chance to play with the Cubs.

When acquired, Barrett was coming off a .208 season with the Montreal Expos.

"I feel indebted to this organization for what it has done for me," he said. "It believed in me at a time when a lot of people gave up on me. A lot of people have faith in me, and when you have that faith and feel that grace extended to you, it's easy to come to the yard and be appreciative. That's how I feel right now."

I like Barrett but I'm not convinced the Cubs will pay him what he would command on the open market (and their obviously not working hard to extend him). I think he'll be gone. IMO, Blanco was signed for two years as insurance against losing him.

I like Barrett, but I wouldn't make more than a 3 year commitment, and that's only if pressed. Catchers in their 30's just scare the bejeezus outta me.

The Cubs are probably waiting to see how Jake Fox develops this year and whether Wieters falls to them in the draft. IMO not extending Barrett yet is not a big indication of anything. He is a good player, but not really a "core" guy like Lee, ARam or Z that would need to be given an extension to keep him from reaching free agent status.

98navigator, I don't know when you started posting but you're pretty active and I haven't noticed you before the past week or so. Just wanted to say welcome to the board and thanks for the links. I tend to be lazy looking for them.

Thanks. I'm a long time lurker but finally decided to join and get into the action (last season didn't inspire much posting...)

doesnt fox have major defensive issues? chris robinson might be the her apparent if he can continue to hit as i understand he is an outstanding defensive catcher. if the cubs end up drafting wieters, is it a lock that they will keep him behind the plate?

any speculations on what he would get in the open market? It doesn't seem like solid catchers hit the market too often -- Pudge being the exception, since his two tries in FA were anything but typical Edited by Electron Blue

I don't think Barrett is a bad gamble to resign to a 3 year deal. If he can't catch anymore, his bat would be very useful in the AL.

Sign Barrett to a two year deal to hold catcher warm for budding superstar Matt Wieters, am I right? Unfortunately for the Mariners they said the same thing two years ago with Jeff Clement.

I would do that.

Unless he feels like giving a big hometown discount, why would Barrett sign a two year contract? He has developed into one of the best hitting catchers in the NL, and regardless of his age, there will be a market for that. I think the Cubs will probably resign him to a reasonable three year deal, if he really does want to stay. He may decline in his final year, but Barrett declining from his peak for one year is still better than Blanco or any of the other garbage that would be available in the near future.

Hopefully Barrett will give the Cubs a very team friendly deal.

I see Barrett being very apt to do this sort of thing.

I'm not sure why, he just seems to love it here enough to try and make things work out. (at least i hope so :D )

I've seen many videos where Barret says he loves being a cub, more than anything else. And this is not typical derrek lee or carlos zambrano stuff. Barret gets gushy.

They got him out of Montreal.

Clement has been rushed, but he's still a hell of a prospect.
