They're No. 1: Outfielder Tyler Colvin, the Cubs' first-round pick in 2006, is in the big-league camp. He has added 20 pounds of muscle this offseason. Colvin batted .268 with 11 homers and 53 RBIs in 64 games with Class A Boise last season. He batted third, and posted a .303 batting average with runners in scoring position.

It'll be intersting to see if this affects his power significantly.

I'm sure the Cubs put him on a baseball intensive type of weight gaining program. I've seen plenty of kids use the wrong program and become stiff rather than staying loose.

I see a bright future for this kid. He seems to be a hard worker, and a student of the game. Lets hope he thrives this year (would it be out of the question to see him progress to AA this season?)

Flexibilty is huge. 20 pounds of muscle, if he did it the real way I'm impressed and as you said if he's still flexable he's in for a nice year. I like seeing young players taking the bull by the horns and going after it like this.

Somewhere Steve Stone is probably telling the story of how Tommy Herr adding 20 lbs of muscle put too much stress on his knees and landed him on the DL.

Well nothing is impossible, but it is most likely that Colvin starts at Low A Peoria. If he does, progressing all the way to AA in one year will be highly unlikely. It happens, but only rarely will a top prospect jump from Low A to AA in the same season. Plus, with a full outfield already and Pie in the wings, the Cubs have no reason to rush Colvin.

If Colvin progresses this year and performs well, he'll get promoted to Daytona quickly, but I agree, AA is a stretch. Knowing the Cubs, they might give him a quick look there right at the end of the season, but he's still a 2009 arrival date target.

Your 2009 OF: Colvin, Pie and Soriano? I think either Matt Murton or Eric Patterson will not be a Cub long-term, there just isn't enough room. I am presuming that Patterson's struggles at 2B will push him to the OF sooner rather than later.

I don't think there is any way Patterson ever moves to the outfield. He'll either make it as an IFer or won't make it.

I'm not a weight lifter so I'm curious how you can put 20 pounds of muscle on in a 5 month period?

The report didn't say it was lean muscle. Weightlifters can put on a lot of weight in a hurry by loading up on protein after workouts on a regular basis without much happening to cut that muscle down.

It's probably a lot of bulk, but not very well cut, if you get the picture.

I gained 20 lbs (without getting fat) every year from the time I was 14-20, and since I wrestled from November-March (losing weight), the bulk of that weight gain took place from March-July workouts (I'd start to lose weight once football started in August). As a 21 year old, I'd think it'd be pretty easy for him to put on that kind of weight.

Interesting, thanks. I understand the weight gain then if that's the case. I know that mcuscle weighs more than fat but you're losing fat and gaining muscle mass and I have to admit I'm a little worried about the quick fixes that are out there. God, I really that that I even think about this stuff but I have to watch kids around here with this stuff too and it's a constant pain in the butt. Don't get me wrong, we haven't had a case here yet but we still have to watch.

as a former powerlifter, i would say that much of the ease of weight gain depends on a persons frame type more so than height. a 6'3" guy with a medium or large frame should be able to put on 20 lbs of muscle in 6 months, especially at such a relatively young age. i would question if he did it at 35 or 40 years old but at 20 it's not unheard of.

I gained 30lbs of fat in my first year of college by just sitting around and eating...

So I'm sure if someone ate a lot and actually did something other than play counter-strike and day of defeat all day long, it wouldn't be too difficult to put on 20lbs of muscle.

Well, we just got a shot of Colvin in the outfield today. If he added twenty pounds in the offseason, he must have weighed around 115 pounds last year, because he is still skinny as hell.

I was at the game yesterday and I agree with IMB - he still looked thin, but not rail thin. And he looked *good* in the game yesterday. I think Sam Fuld will be starting in AA, but I expect Colvin will miss us in Peoria (darn it) and start in Daytona.

On a CF note, I heard from our trainer Nick that Davy Gregg has chosen to retire. He's a great guy and know that he'll be great at whatever he decides to do back in SC.

That's what I thought. He can gain another 30 pounds...
