Someone please acknowledge you don't believe this nonsense as you post it.

I'm pretty sure we are all just having a little fun with it.

I was alright with it until I read, "Enjoy it while you can, Cub fans"

%#$& YOU SI.

That's the only encouraging part of the whole thing. Clearly, they think the Cubs are bad and will not pick them for the division, playoffs, or World Series. So there's still hope...

Hey, the Bears were on the cover of SI right before the Super Bowl and we saw how well THAT worked out. Personally, I think it's the East Coast media trying to keep the Midwest down.

So were the Colts.

Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods have been on it more than a few times, too.

Odd that you bring up Tiger. Sports Illustrated in 2002 did a cover story on its own curse and here is what they found:

Sports Illustrated[/url]"]In investigating virtually all of SI's 2,456 covers, we found 913 "jinxes" -- a demonstrable misfortune or decline in performance following a cover appearance roughly 37.2 percent of the time. One of the most fascinating things we discovered seemed to buttress Loehr's contention that the Jinx is more likely to strike athletes in fine-motor-skill sports like golf and tennis than smashmouth sports like boxing. Golfers were "jinxed" almost 70 percent of the time and tennis players after more than 50 percent of their appearances, while boxers suffered barely 16 percent of the time.

So while there is rock-solid proof that the cover curse exists, the fact that it's happened 37.2 percent of the time is something of an oddity.

I'll make it seem worse and say its a .372 avg.

No that is not "rock solid" proof of anything.

The rate is less than chance levels.

Let's hope SI doesn't pick the Cubs to win it all this year...then we'll know we are toast. Usually the SI jinx affects teams/players within a short period of time. So as long as no one else gets hurt falling out of hot tubs, catching fungos or fishing, we will be fine.

I'm pretty sure that's what he meant, just a typo.

Anyways, what would be the chance rating for this case?

I don't think it was a typo

Chance level is 50%.

It's like someone making a prediction once a week and being right 14 weeks out of 52.

Or, if someone were to bet based on the SI cover they would lose 6 bets out of 10.

Golfer's aside from Tiger rarely ever win and their performance often fluctuates from week to week.

It's an asinine theory made for people who believe in horoscopes and UFOs

For all those who are pissed about the words on the cover...I think they are referring to having Lou as the manager, not taking a shot at the Cubs. At least that's how I took it.

Of course, having seen only the cover I could be way off.

It's good to see Lou and Soriano in uniform though.

I interpretted the line "enjoy it while you can" as a reference to the gushing optimism that swells up inside the hearts of all Cubs fans this time of year, thinking "This could actually be the year". And then over the next 6 months all our hopes and dreams are slowly ground into a filmy residue, bitter in taste and foul in odor. This residue taints our souls for the following 3 to 4 months as we wait out the long cold months of winter, until around this time of year when spring training starts and we are once again clean.

I couldn't say what I want to on a porn site. Somebody kill these guys

Seconded.

SI and ESPN have always gone out of their collective way to take shots at the Cubs.

After the Cubs win the WS, I wish there was a way they could keep SI and ESPN from covering them, basically telling SI and ESPN to go ef themselves.

Was there some ancient war between Chicago and the East Coast that I'm unaware of? I don't understand the incessant hatred of Chicago that comes from there. They certainly don't hate on other cities like St. Louis and Houston like they do us, that's for sure.

I mean look at that line: "Enjoy it while you can, Cubs fans." My God, is there any other city in sports that has to endure such a blatant, front-cover assault like that? Someone clue me in, because I've never seen anything close to that, ever, in regards to another team.

They're basically salivating over watching the Cubs fail. And after what happened with the Bears this year, Christ did we kill Giuliani or something?
