I'm not sure if I'm misreading some people, but you're sorely mistaken if you think there's a chance Marquis isn't in the starting rotation. Hope he pitches great, but man this is the worst FA signing in Cubs history, past, present, and future.

I don't know that I can argue and that doesn't make me happy.

has jim, lou, or muskat even mentioned guzman? maybe the lack of respect will tick him off, light a fire under him, whatever and he'll do what marshall did last ST. then its tougher to leave him in iowa.

i'm just trying to make sense of this. everything looks better with marquis not in the picture. he's a sore thumb here, cant trade him, cant send him down. 3/21? WTG Jim.

Just use the stat that batters swing at his first pitch 70% of the time.

It's actually 115%.

60% of the time, they swing every time.

They swing so hard they go around twice. Helicopter action.

Lets see how he performs before making bold statements like that. If he reverts back to his sub 4.00 ERA form, $7MM a year will be a bargain, if he puts up a 6.00 ERA it was a horrible signing.

Yeah, I can't give the nod to Marquis until he actually pitches his way to something worse than Todd Hundley.

Haven't we learned not to listen to a word muskat says? Let's see how things shape out through spring training.

You've been on quite a hiatus. Welcome back. I fixed Muskat for you.

I've been lurking quite a bit, and preoccupied with the Bears great run. I'm ready for baseball season!

Hundley at least didn't look insane at the time. He looked as if he had recovered from his injuries and the Cubs had a massive crater at catcher. The '07 Cubs have 5 guys I would have rather given the spot to(all things considered) than Marquis.

Has anyone else noticed how like every thread the past week has downward spiraled into a discussion of just how bad and stupid Jason Marquis's contract is? Can we now say that his contract is so bad that it's badness is consuming all of northsidebaseball.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Oneri (and maybe even Hendry?) were touting him at the convention.

Gooz has his curve and command back, I think he's going to have a big year this year. Hopefully it will be in the big leagues and not at Iowa.

Hendry needs to be shot on the spot if Marquis starts over Hill despite Hill having a better spring. Hill should have a spot in the rotation that's his to lose. He was clearly the best pitcher down the stretch last year. Hendry's job is supposedly on the line this year, so he clearly needs to use the best pitchers, not the most highly paid.

The other half of the time, they take the pitch every time. And they don't make contact 100% of that time either. :o

Would the crater analogy for justifying a signing apply to Estes when he filled our *need* for a lefty in the rotation?

Estes was a worse signing than either. But at least we weren't stuck with him for three years though, and we did manage to get some good players back out of Hundley.

I feel like the rotation will shake out: Lilly, Z, Hill, Marquis, Prior with Miller in a long relief mode. The whole Cotts thing is weird, though. I've read a lot of articles saying he has a shot at the starting rotation or he will be in a long relief role. Seems like we have an odd man out and it should be, yet is unlikely to be, Marquis.

agreed, if anyone will be in the long-relief mode, it will be miller. there's less to lose by putting him there. prior will at least get a shot, and probably several, to get into the rotation--and hendry thinks too much of hill to discard him just when he starts revealing his promise. what sense would that make?
