I don't understand this at all. Why not package Ryu w/ other excess parts and get a better player? Not that Ryu is all that exciting of a prospect, but with as many prospects as the D-Rays have, you couldn't package a couple of our guys for one of theirs?

Just a lowsy trade, IMO.

I see Hendry's plan is finally coming together.

If he trades enough major-league ready, back-of-the-rotation starters away for next to nothing... well, we might actually need Marquis.

JRK is a major league ready starter? He's going to get destroyed in the AL East if they start him.

139.1 IP 3.23 ERA 114 K, 51 BB in the PCL. That ERA is good for sixth in the league.

While I agree his ERA will look nasty facing Boston and New York, there's no doubt in my mind that Ryu is major league ready... his cup'o'coffee notwithstanding.

Blah trade. We got two guys who MIGHT be future utility players for a guy who MIGHT be a middle to back end of the rotation or a middle relief guy.

Nothing to get upset or excited about.

Absolutely right. Ryu had no future with the Cubs and these two players probably have very little future with the Cubs too.

Andrew (Andy) Lopez was drafted by the Rays in the 8th round of the 2005 draft. He's 20 years old and hasn't played above NY Penn league in Princeton.

He has a minor league line of 282 .374 .455 829.

In 2005, he hit 325 .403 .542 945, in 32 games but then in 2006 only hit 256 .356 .402 758 while repeating the same level. It's hard to know what kind of player he'll be. I like the OBP from him, but it's frighening that his numbers declined while repeating a level.

He's a right-handed hitter.

Hmmmm.....way fewer ABs in '06. Was he possibly nursing an injury?

Yeah, I hate it when GM's trade away those all-too-valuable undersized righthanders who throw in the high 80's

not much lost in ryu imo but he is not really undersized at 6-3 220.

I don't think you are looking at his line correctly. He had 120 ABs in 05 and 199 in 06.

Ah, I see, Ryu is as good as Maddux. I missed that notation in the scouting report.

Best comparison ever.

anybody else get excited when they heard the cubs had a trade with the D-Rays? followed by the usual cub disappointment

Not me-I heard it here first, so I saw the thread title that Ryu had been traded, and figured that if we gave an ok prospect there we'd probably only get ok prospects back, and was right on that conclusion.

I don't mind this deal. I'd be upset if it was anyone any better than Ryu. Ryu was probably destined for the bullpen at Iowa. The Iowa rotation could be quite crowded.

And 199 ABs at short-season A-ball is about 2/3 of the season if not more.

But would we need him at 7M per season?
