MESA, Ariz. -- After announcing at the Cubs Convention he wouldn't discuss a contract extension with the Cubs if they don't come to an agreement before Opening Day, Carlos Zambrano said Monday he's gone if he has to play out the season.

Zambrano, seeking a long-term deal with an annual salary in the range of Barry Zito's $18 million-a-year contract with San Francisco, dropped the bombshell in an interview with WGN-Ch. 9.

Well, is this Maddux 2?

Just give him what he wants! He's worth it!!

HE didnt say it that bluntly on Comcast, but he did say he knows a lot of teams will want him to come play for him and he will not talk contract during the season.

Good. We'll trade him for elite prospects.

I love Z, but a longterm deal with that kind of mileage on his arm is not a good idea.

prospects that may never amount to nothing

So...that's something, right?

I'd rather have 2-3 guys who could be the low cost cornerstone to a team than one ace making near market value who blows his arm out in the near future.

If Hendry wants Z long term he will get him signed. Hendry has only lost one player that he went hard after (Furcal).

Z is in a can't lose situation and he knows it. The Cubs have some hard choices to make.

And who is going to give the Cubs that type of package for only one year of Zambrano?

Someone confident enough that they could resign him. So someone with loadsof cash... Yankees, Boston, Mets

Aside from Z, name the last pitcher the Cubs brought up from the minors who has displayed the ability to be a cornerstone to a team?

The Cubs have the financial resources to pay Z. For all the moves Hendry has made this offseason, this will be the most important.

I don't really think this means anything worth getting worked up over. HE is saying he will leave (test free agency) if he doesn't have a contract. Well of course. I highly doubt he would ever say "I am ruling out the Cubs after 2007 if I am not locked up before hand" Seems silly to eliminate a potential top bidder.

Showed the ability?

I agree with Garwilly and to some extent with richhill. This is a tough call for the Cubs. From a PR standpoint, they will be crucified if they let him leave. But from a baseball standpoint, it could be the right move. I think the question is who do they get in return and how do they spend any money saved. Given that they are in win-now mode extremus, I don't see the Cubs trading Z this year.

Problem is that none of those 3 teams really have that package, and even then they aren't going to part with it without an extension in hand. Teams will just wait out the situation and bid extravagantly in November. The time when it was feasible to trade Zambrano has come and gone.

there is no way they can say they want to win now and trade Zambrano

unless they get big name players (more than 1) in return

Good Riddance then. Seriously, why say this? It helps the Cubs more then anything. They can paint him the greedy guy he is being and trade him off for a stable of young players from the Angels.

I am more for the Trade Z bandwgn then ever now. The 2 sides are as far apart as they can possibly be. Zambrano might be a budding talent but nowhere worth 15.5 million. It took Zito longer to get that kind of cash and he earned it. Hwere is Z's cy young or era title or anything worth noting? Sure he is in the discussion but Z has never dominated a statistical category. Why pay him like he has?

Z's value is never going to be higher. Trade his whiny, sorry butt away and get Wood & Adenhart and I guarantee that Cub fans will forget Z in 2 years.
