i haven't been able to find this anywhere, but since the offseason appears to be over with the exception of arbitration deals and such, I was trying to write up a 25-man. In the past we've had Macias, Nevin, and others who in a pinch could throw on the gear. Its always nice to know about people's extra skills. Do we have anybody like that this season?

The emergency catcher typically needs to be on the 25 man roster.

In all honesty, I don't really care who it is, and we better not be keeping someone who shouldn't be on the roster just because of it. Blanco is probably the worst hitter on the bench, there's no reason for another bench player still being available if he's already been inserted, which leaves only the very unlikely double catcher injury as the only thing that would require an emergency catcher.

every year though we have that fifteen inning game where the thought starts to creep into your mind. I was hoping maybe a Derosa or maybe a Ward could do it.

who cares?

the worst thing that could happen if both your catchers get hurt is you have to stick some random guy back there, he is terrible, and you lose one game.

there's no sense wasting a roster spot on a guy that could under the most rare of circumstances lose you one game. it's like saying you should carry 18 pitchers in case the game goes 35 innings.

He didn't say that someone should be put on the roster only as an emergency catcher-he just asked if anybody currently on the roster could serve as an emergency catcher. While it may not come up during the season, it's still a good thing to know.

It may not come up but could easily happen. Pinch hitter for the starter then the back up gets hurt. Presto you need a 3rd catcher. Only an idiot would look to fill this position for sake of filling it. But I am sure some one on the 25 man roster caught in High School or early in their Minor League career.

Like I said earlier, when is Blanco going to be pinch hitting while there are still players on the bench? He's the worst bat on the bench.

When Blanco starts, and Barrett is the guy that comes in and gets hurt.

I think he's talk about a situation where Blanco is starting, is pinch-hit for then Barrett is injured. For the record my money is on either Ward or Theriot being the number three catcher.

i think i recall something about Marmol also. I would rather not risk a young pitcher catching a foul tip and injuring anything. I was also not asking to throw a third catcher (Soto) on the roster, that is a waste of resources. I was just wondering if anyone had any real insight on what would happen if either Barret/Blanco was out of the game and the remaining one got injured what might happen. Being down to your final catcher happens several times every year, rarely do you need that emergency guy, but it is something that I'm sure Piniella will look at, that is his job, to be ready for situational decisions. yikes

A left-handed emergency catcher? That would be something to see.
