Per ESPN. Brewers get a bargain here at 6 million with a guy who can play a bunch of defensive positions and give you 30-40 HR's while getting on at a decent clip.

It would be a better deal if they planned on using him at SS instead of LF.

I think they actually plan on using him in CF, where his value will be high but not quite as high as it would be if he played SS.

Isn't Hall suspect at best defensively at short? I seem to remember him being pretty weak-perhaps they think he'll be better in CF thus raising his overall value?

Melvin has been quoted a number of times that Hall will start in Center!

As he should. I believe the Brewers have a guy named, J.J. Hardy, who plays the ss position pretty well.

Unfortunately, Hardy hasn't shown he can be of much value offensively.

Its so refreshing how un-Soriano-like he has been throughout the whole situation.

Ohh and by the way, MORP has him at nearly 50M for the next 4 years with barely predicting a regression.

He's a black hole in the lineup. I'll miss playing the Brewers and seeing him in the 2nd spot.

When he first came up he was kind of a butcher there, but he was pretty reliable last season. He's a great overall athlete, so maybe Melvin thinks he can be a better CF, or the best option that the team has since they seem pretty committed to Hardy at SS.

I think moving him to center could be a very good move, if JJ Hardy plays respectably at short.

How many arbitration years is this contract covering?

At least 3, maybe more. I'm not completely familiar with the process, and I can't remember if he went through arbitration last year. I don't believe he did, I think this was his first year of arby.

And dew, I think the Brewers believe he can play SS just fine. They just want to see him improve with his bat. A lot of Brewer fans hope that he can play like his post All-Star game 2005 when he hit for most of his power and hit over .300. It looks like they're willing to work him into at least an average hitter while taking his above average D at SS.

The Fielding Bible had Hall at +4 in 2005 (the only year I see data for him). Also at +4 in 2005: Cesar Izturis, Omar Vizquel.

Davenport Translations have him as an above average SS in 2003-2005, but below average in 2006. Overall, DT ranks him as a very slightly above average SS.

Chris Dial's metric had Hall at just one run under average at SS last year, ahead of guys like Royce Clayton and Jimmy Rollins.

If I were a Brewer's fan, I'd like to see Hall in CF and Hardy at SS, but if Hardy goes down or proves he can't hit, it would be logical to move Hall back to short. He may not be a gold glover, but he's certainly no butcher.

Hardy's offense is underrated because of a terrible start to 2005 when he not only was jumping to the majors with very little time in AAA but also was coming off of a major shoulder injury.

In the 2nd half of 2005 he posted an .866 OPS, in the first half an .560. In 2006 he OPS wasn't so hot but it was because he had just had a mini slump when he got hurt, he posted a .772 OPS in april which is probably about the OPS he'd post in a full season if they protect him a little bit against good righties.

He is not going to be a black hole in the lineup long term.

PECOTA doesn't project Hardy to ever be a particularly good offensive SS.

But PECOTA does predict Hardy to be worth about one or one-and-a-half wins more than Cesar Izturis for each of the next five years.

Its never good when you have to be compared to Izturis. Kidding aside, if PECOTA is right, the Brewers infield offense will be just fine with a 750 OPS SS when you get 850 out of 3B, 830 out of 2B, and 900 out of 1B.

God, I wish I was a Brewers fan.

Hardy probably is going to be a future number 2 hitter with his contact abilities. He probably could hit you 15-20HR and bat around .300 year after year. He is going to be a really solid ss for years to come.

so far, it looks like hardy's just a guy. the term "contact abilities" is virtually meaningless. he hasn't come close to .300 in his first 2 seasons, i understand he was injured, but he looks like nothing special. certainly nothing worth playing hall out of position for.
