I wonder if they'll have to eat the money or if he's unable to play and insurance will pick it up.
I think he'd have to be carried on the DL rather than released for insurance to cover it. That's why, several years ago, the Orioles kept Albert Belle on the DL rather than releasing him (or him retiring) even though it was known he couldn't play anymore.

If that's the case, why would they release them? They could just transfer him to the 60 day DL and he doesn't count against the roster. Or does that only work once rosters have been set at the end of ST?

They could have worked out a settlement with the insurance company that allows them to release him now.

He might have eaten the money himself.

Cubs made our scoop-let official today by releasing Glendon Rusch. Nice guy. He also was the "tech services" department in the clubhouse, helping other guys with their computers and iPods. Wow, how the game has changed.

Thanks Bruce. Any news on if the Cubs are eating the remainder of his contract or if there is some settlement on the matter?

I'm working on that.

I do wish him better health, but at least now I won't have to worry about going to games in which he starts. It used to be Clement for me, but at least he was decent-to-good. Then Rusch took over as the guy I would usually draw when going to a game.

This year, my luck will probably produce games in which Marquis starts.

Rusch was a great addition in 2004. It came to the point that I looked forward to his starts, as well as Z's and Maddux's.

Oddly enough, I think Z is the only Cubs starter I've seen pitch more than once - I saw him once each in 2004 and 2005.

ETA: Nope, I've seen Maddux twice too - once each in 2005 and 2006.

I heard on the score that they are paying the remainder of his contract. . $3 mil for 07.

Cubs are on the hook for the whole deal.

Do you know if the contract was insured? I'm guessing that it wasn't since it wasn't big in the scheme of things, so I expect they assumed the risk.

From what I understand, it was not insured. It was a straight, guaranteed deal.
