Bruce,

Is Rusch likely out of baseball? Is there a chance he may work with the organization in some capacity? While I didn't want to watch him pitch again, he was genuinely one of the good guys.

Right now, it's too early to tell whether or when he'll be able to pitch again. He's one of the nice guys in the game.

Cubs are on the hook for the whole deal.

Do you know if the contract was insured? I'm guessing that it wasn't since it wasn't big in the scheme of things, so I expect they assumed the risk.

From what I understand, it was not insured. It was a straight, guaranteed deal.

Ouch for the Cubs. Bittersweet for Glendon.

Too bad for Rusch. I wasn't as down on him as many people were. He had one good, one decent, and one horrible year for the Cubs. All in all not bad, although Hendry definitely goofed by giving him the multi-year contract after 2005. I blame Hendry for that, not Rusch.

Best of luck to Glendon in whatever he chooses to do in his future. As bad as he was at times (and he certainly had good stretches too), it was always hard to see him fail because he appeared to really take it hard. Seems like a great guy.

Funny thing is, if he could come back healthy and in better physical shape, I wouldn't blink at a minor league deal. So long as it's cheap.

2005 Glendon Rusch would have been useful stashed at Iowa last year, lol. Stupid clots and weight. :?

I don't understand why he can't be used in the Cubs system. Might as well get something for the money

Because he has to come off that medication to pitch and if he comes off the meds, he'll have a blood clots.

Really makes no sense to even just keep him hanging around at Iowa if he can't pitch at all in 2007. His contract would be over before he's ready to pitch again.

Rusch had one good year with us and then reverted to his career numbers. There is no need to waste any space on him when we could easily replace him with a minor leaguer. I wish him the best in the future and hope he has nothing to do with the Cubs.

From the Tribune article on Rusch...

Link.

"He could stop taking his medication and play now, but he would have a recurrence," Tanzer said. "His plans are for 2008."

Tanzer said the Cubs would be his first choice, just because they tried to keep him on the roster this season for one more year of service time toward retirement benefits.

"Loyalty begets loyalty," Tanzer said. "He hopes to come [to Chicago] this spring and maybe work some in spring."

Doesn't he already have ten years of service time? That would give him the ol' golden parachute, right?
