Craig Wilson-1B-Braves Jan. 18 - 6:54 pm et

Braves agreed to terms with first baseman-outfielder Craig Wilson, who had been with the Pirates, on a one-year, $2 million deal.

Now the Adam LaRoche deal is going to truly improve the Braves. Wilson, a career .296/.395/.543 against lefties, will probably start the season platooning with Scott Thorman at first base, but he can also be a very solid regular if Thorman disappoints. He's a defensive downgrade for sure, but over the course of his career, he's been just as productive of a hitter as LaRoche. The Braves have themselves a bargain here.

I'm so glad we sank over 100 mil into Soriano, when 2 mil for Craig Wilson + Jacque would have given us about the same production in a nifty platoon.

Craig Wilson is a decent player, but many on here severly overrate him.

I don't think so. I've never seen anyone want him for anything but a platoon with Jacque/anyone else stinking it up against lefties and a decent bat against lefties on the bench.

Wilson sucks against righties, how are the Braves planning on using him?

Nice signing for only 2 million though.

The Braves are pretty high on Scott Thorman, so Wilson sits against righties, but becomes a major threat off the bench.

Against Oliver Perez, Tom Glavine, Dontrelle Willis and the many other lefties in the NL, Wilson should see plenty of at bats.

Plus, should Thorman not aclimate well, you couldnt have a better back up plan.

He may have sucked last year against righties, but he has a 793 OPS vs righties in his career...hardly sucking.

Man, I would've offered twice that to ensure he'd sign here for less than a starting role. Schuerholz is very very good at his job.

Didn't he make 3.5M last year...so this is quite a paycut. I guess right now its his best chance for playing time.

Some posters on this board thinks this is a good deal. If Wilson was half the player that most on this board think he is....why did he have to wait till January 18 to sign a deal?

My guess is, Craig Wilson wasn't that highly thought of around baseball, as some posters think.

Baseball executives are infallible.

Marques Colston was selected in the last round of the draft. Therefore, he is not a good WR.

Initial platoon at first against lefties.

greg maddux didn't sign with the cubs until february. does that mean he sucked?

who said he "had" to wait until january 18?

what's the cutoff date for good players to sign? zito signed in late december, and he certainly doesn't suck. i guess three weeks makes a big difference as to whether you're the highest paid pitcher in baseball history or a bum.

Lilly signed before Zito. Does that make Lilly more highly thought of around baseball than Zito? Of course not... such an assertation would be ridiculous. The order in which people sign has very little correllation with how good of a player they are.

I think part of the board's infatuation with Craig Wilson was that he was undervalued for his performance. This signing certainly does nothing to disprove that.

Speaking of fairly productive veterans who would look great in a platoon roll:

Free-agent outfielder Trot Nixon has agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cleveland Indians, ESPN.com's Peter Gammons reports.

1 year, five million, trot nixon and craig wilson...

For a one year committment, and 130-some million dollars less... we could have had about the same production in RF, if not moreso.

But we'd be without a leadoff hitter...........

Edit: goony beat me to it.

Yes, but neither Trot nor Craig is a leadoff hitter. How could the Cubs go into 2007 without a true leadoff hitter? Have you seen the market for leadoff hitters?

I agree but there still are no guarentees that Nixon will be healthy enough to play a whole season though.

Platoon players don't play whole seasons.
