I've said it a couple times, but I don't understand why we're gambling on Floyd, who is 34 and has had past injury problems, returning to form and being better than Murton against RHP instead of Murton, who is pre-prime, cheap, injury free, and absolutely mashed RHP in the second half.

If its a one year deal with incentives, I really have no problem with it.

I definitely agree with this. The offseason is almost over and the payroll is not that close to the limit yet. If Floyd is healthy, then the splitting of time will likely be an upgrade, and when you consider the help to the bench it will certainly be an upgrade to the current team. If he struggles or is not healthy, he is not being depended on to be a starter, Murton will play most everyday, and the money that would just stay unspent otherwise is simply overpaying for a decent bench player (even if he struggles, he'll still be a pretty good bench option).

I understand why. Hendry realizes he needs more offense, but he's not capable of efficiently adding said offense.

If they trade Jones, I can't imagine what stopgap CF'er is out there that would be an asset as a starting Cf'er.

Any chance Oakland wants to unload Kotsay? Not that I want him, but the Cubs were once after him, and I could see Beane unloading him and the remaining $15m owed.

Is that stopgap enough though? Also, Kotsay is the only CF'er they have, unless they shifted Bradley to CF, which leaves them needing a RF'er. The only FA option out there is P. Wilson for CF. Edited by UK

Because Hendry isn't very intelligent?

Would we prefer to have no depth at the corner outfield position? Because that worked so well with First Base last year...

If it's a one year deal, there's no harm nor foul. If he sucks, nothing to stop Hendry from just DFA'ing him.

Why in the hell would Hendry consider platooning Murton? Has he ever embraced a platoon in any way? I ask because I don't remember it happening. If Floyd is signed, I see our outfield as: Murton-Soriano-Floyd, with Jones being dealt.

God, Hendry is so stupid. I absolutely hate depth. We either need 25 superstars or plainly one popular sophomore with no backups. Hendry goes out and gets FLOYD of all people... a cheap power option for the bench that IF healthy makes the team much stronger but since when are there "IFs" in baseball?? All my buddies are talking about Crawford, Vernon Wells, Andruw Jones so it's either one of them or Murton vs. the volcano. Cliff Floyd is like, older than my dad and my dad is horrible at baseball. Simple math. But does Hendry listen? We know Theriot will easily outperform any other middle infield option just like we knew with Cedeno. We'd be right yet again, all you have to do is realize Theriot had a .412 OBP which is at least 100 points better than DeRosa is capable of because he's not nearly as hip to the bone. But I digress. Someone please make Hendry aware of who Carl Crawford is!!!!!!!!!!!! Or at least give him a lesson in Cliff Floyd vs. Ryan Church. Church can be had for our leftover junk that Hendry would de-roster if he had any brains and his OPS is hundreds better than Floyd's in 2007. UGH.

Since when are there anything but IFs in baseball?

The whole game is one big IF. Perhaps you would care to clarify your meaning?

The positives:

Good OBP...

Cliff Floyd was 26th in MVP voting in 2005

Some stuff I want to know.. what are his numbers at Shea? What about Wrigley?

Perhaps he could clarify the entire post... Though I'm often pretty adept at picking up on sarcasm, there may have been too much of it in that post to actually decipher its meaning.

Kotsay's #'s last year are not as good as Jones. I don't care if Jones wants to be traded - he should be our centerfielder unless we can get an obvious upgrade. I don't think I mind having Floyd on the team - we need to remember that Lou is managing this year and not the Dustman so my guess if Floyd is stinking it up in his ab's Lou is not going to continue to run him out there. If he has a good year we have a much deeper team.

what is tinyurl.com? and how is it affiliated with the tribune? If you go to the trib's site, there is no mention of any floyd story.

Click on the link. Tiny URL is a free URL redirection service. You go to thier site, put in an unusually long URL, and it gives you a much shorter URL to the site you're trying to reach. Its perfectly harmless.

Why do you hate depth? That really makes no sense at all.

Very entertaining, Wilk. I enjoyed that. Particularly the dad -> bad at baseball logic. Compelling stuff.

yeah, that really doesn't do much for me as far as being a positive.

Wait, I missed the press conference where Hendry said that he's 100% set on platooning Murton. Nevermind the fact that he's said nothing but good things about Murton and his playing time. Nevermind that it's not Hendry's job to set platoons --- I think it's Lou's.

Let's wait and see how things work out before we cruicfy Hendry (again).
