I don't have ESPN insider so I don't know exactly what they are talking but it says "Blue Jays shop holiday sale for Rios". I don't know if they are shopping Alex Rios, but if they are we need to get on this real quick and plug him in CF.

Alex Rios-OF-Blue Jays Dec. 17 - 1:21 pm et

With Vernon Wells locked up, the Blue Jays will consider trading Alex Rios, ESPN's Buster Olney reports.

The Jays tried to trade Rios for Paul Maholm a year ago. Fortunately for them, the Pirates turned down the offer (bad GMs have a way of cancelling each other out sometimes). Rios went on to have his breakthough season, albeit one interriupted by a staph infection, and has a lot more value now. The Blue Jays shouldn't think about parting with him for anything less than a rising star pitcher with a similar amount of service time. We'd argue that Rios, being four years away from free agency, is worth even more in trade than Wells was a few days ago. Olney suggests that the Mets might be a match with Lastings Milledge and Aaron Heilman. That's the kind of pairing that might tempt the Jays.

I think every trade offer regarding the Mets involves Milledge and Heilman. I think thats a little much for the Mets to give up, but then again they must have really liked Victor Zambrano too.

A "rising star pitcher" to me sounds like Hill. No thanks on that deal. I agree that Milledge and Heilman sounds like way too much for Rios, maybe it should be Milledge or Heilman. I'd love to have him, but not at the equivalent of Milledge and Heilman.

He is a pretty good player, and I wouldn't mind him with the Cubbies. I'd give up Marshall and maybe a minor leaguer for him.

That won't come close to getting it done, though.

They would ask for Hill and at least another prospect, IMO. That's way too much.

Would anyone here trade Pie for Rios?

Just curios.

They're similar prospects, with Rios being older and further along, and therefore closer to fulfilling that potential. Problem is that there would need to be another significant player(at least) in addition to Pie to get Rios, which is why he won't be worth his cost.

I'd think about it, as they have some similar tools, but I have more hope for Pie than I do for Rios.

Rios probably won't be a high K guy, but his IsoD numbers in the majors and minors have been mediocre to abysmal. He'll probably give you 25-30 HRs in his peak. However, his OBP is strongly tied to his AVG; he'll have to be able to maintain good BABIP and LD percentages over his career to be a productive hitter. If he goes into a slump where he can't hit his way out of a paper bag, he won't have patience to pick up the slack.

I don't know if Rios has the speed and instincts to play CF. If he doesn't, then I'd shy away from dealing Pie for him.

Actually, the only difference between Rios of 06 and previous years, was that he hit an insanely low amount of fly balls in 04 and 05 (juan pierre level), and was somewhat normal in 06. He never really showed much power in the minors (he only had one season with an IsoP >103). I don't think the minor league splits go back to when he was in the minors so I don't know his FB%, but I'm guessing, based on his HR #s that 06 was an abberation. His LD%s have been pretty average and consistent and his 06 BABIP was only .010 higher than expected, so I wouldn't consider it fluke lucky in terms of balls finding holes. But in order for him to put up future season of OPS significantly greater than 800 hes going to have to put the ball in the air like his abberational 06 year.

I had looked at his batted ball earlier and came to the same basic conclusion.

From 2004-2006, his groundballs have decreased at almost the same rate that his flyballs have increased, so it's possible that he's made a conscious effort to change his swing, but I think you're right and his power surge in 2006 won't happen again this year.

the visiting jays fan has wiped his forehead for the thread title - it's Alex.

I like Rios but don't expect we're a fit this time

Why does every trade rumor for the mets involve Lastings Milledge. Do the Mets really want to trade him or is he there only chip...

I guess I question if the Mets really like him and if they don't what is his true value...

Little bit from Column A, little bit from Column B.

Scott Kazmir. Would they still be wanting to pay Zito 100+ million if they had him today?

The same reason every Cub trade rumor involves Pie or Hill.

His name is Rios, there's no need to understand.

I don't follow that one, but the first name is Alex rather than Alez.
