An assistant that is well versed on stats would go a long way towards moving this club into the new millenium.

Looking up and down the major league and minor league rosters, Hendry gives me the impression he's anti-stats. That may not be the case, but the list of available players he's acquired (except Murton) over the years sure looks like it.

The Cubs do have a "stat guy", his name is Chuck Wasserstrom. I remember reading an article about him and coming away depressed. Analysis didn't seem to be his forte, instead he was the guy responisble for digging out splits (you know, how does so-and-so hit on Tuesdays in day games at Wrigley), or at least that was the impression the article left. I'm certain he is the guy who'd come out with statistical print-outs before games allowing Dusty to justify playing Neifi because he had a lifetime 3-8 batting mark against against pitcher X (Dusty: "That's a .375 batting average!").

Since it has been a couple of years since I read the article, who knows if anyting has changed. The impression I got was not that the Cubs ignore stats, just that they misuse them.

That's exactly what I remember. I also think the guy's old job was something in media relations or PR.

Needless to say, they aren't employing any Beane disciples or baseball prospectus writers.

I think some of the folks here should apply. I am not kidding. The days of having to be a "baseball guy" are over.

Please

So, I've looked at this a few hundred times and I still cant figure out what was so disagreeable with the above statement. Wanna help me?

What if it happens to be a real good baseball guy, whats wrong with that?

The problem is that all it takes to qualify as a good baseball guy, is to be a baseball guy for a long time and to believe strongly in conventional wisdom. Everytime I hear about somebody who spends a lot of time in the game but is not yet a GM or manager, inevitably you hear what a good baseball guy he is.

Someone who cherishes having a good batting average as way more important than stupid guys who walk alot?

Someone who believes catching the ball, not striking out, not walking, stealing bases, and therefore being "disruptive" is the real way to win a game?

What is the difference between this "baseball guy" with someone who also uses stats?

There will always be "baseball guys" in power. The statement though, referred to the notion that you no longer have to be a baseball lifer to get such a job.

Btw, what is a "baseball guy"?

he's got moxie, heart, grit. he chews tobacco and slides headfirst into home plate. he doesn't use daggum computers. he can pick the next sammy sosa out of a group of 100 lanky 13 year-old dominicans just by shaking their hands and staring in their eyes. he doesn't write books about himself.

That's good.

IMO, a baseball guy is someone who played The Game at some level professionally. Someone who's been a coach, a scout, or an instructor in some capacity. Someone who's "payed his dues" and "earned" his way up the latter by sticking with baseball when he wasn't getting paid a lot of money. Knowledge, skill, and ability factor in way down the line.

That made me laugh rather hard.

Walt Jocketty might be a baseball guy, but the Cardinals definitely have some very smart stat geek type people working for them.

Billy Beane is a baseball guy too. Appearently he learned what not to do from his time in the majors.
