Given the deal that was discussed between Colorado, Pitt and the Cubs, I'm going to start a new rumor. I don't really want it to happen, but if the Cubs are thinking about moving the rookie out of the rotation, I want them to set their sights appropriately. Let the word get out!

Hill + Jones for Brad Hawpe, who then plays RF for the Cubs. Soriano is given CF. Either Prior, Cotts or one of the other kids gets Hill's spot in the rotation.

Heck, while I'm at it, might as well make the trade bigger!

Hill + Jones + Marshall for Hawpe + Jennings

Too bad the Rockies wouldn't go for this version. :(

Someone should email mlbtraderumors.com. They'll have the rumor up on the site in no time.

I'd like to say I'm not a fan of trading Hill. he showed way too much potential last year to trade him away. Just look at what pitchers are getting in this market right now. He's too valuable to trade off unless he nets us a Cabrera type.

I must have missed something said on sports talk radio in Chicago. The Cubs are thinking of not starting Hill?

Can the end result be that Jason Bay is a Cub?

I'd also like to add that if the Hendry wants to move Hill out of the rotation he should be fired on the spot...no questions asked.

There's really no reason to think that this is the case.

I'm pretty sure Bay is under contract through 08 so it'd be impossibly dumb for the Buccos to deal him now.

We currently have guaranteed contracts to five veteran starters. Prior and Miller are both health risks, but if they're able to pitch, who gets knocked out of the rotation?

This is the same management team that doesn't appear to view Murton as a full time player, either.

I'm not saying I'm an advocate for this trade. All I'm saying is that if the Cubs are considering trading Hill, they should aim at the right players. Hawpe had these numbers outside the humidor last year: .303/.395/.571/.966. Pitchers are making a mint in this climate, but corner OF's in their prime who hit like that aren't cheap, either.

If we're going to trade Hill, I think we should set our sights even higher. Arod plz.

Hill isn't proven enough (or high-ceiling enough) to be a centerpiece for ARod.

Heh, I have the highest respect for Tim, and I've seen a lot of dopey trade proposals. But this is one of the worst I've seen. Or, maybe one of the worst I've seen from somebody smart.

The Cubs are committed to assuming that Prior won't pitch. (For good reason). Miller is just a flier on a dispposable peanuts contract (you spend $21 on a flyer like Marquis; what does that make a $1.5 Miller investment?) The Cubs are dead set that Soriano will not play CF. (Piniella has flatly stated that he'd be in corner from the day he had press about Soriano signing till this week at meetings.)

So, the Cubs are going to trade Hill because he's blocked by a $1.5 flier vet and a Prior that the Cubs completely expect to be disabled, in order to push Soriano into a position they don't consider him suited to play.

Pure genius!

Sorry tim, I know you were just having fun. But wow, that one is way, way, way, way, way out there.

If Prior and Miller are both healthy, Hill should stick in the rotation, Rusch should be DFA'd, and Prior should be long man so that he can rebuild a damaged arm, so we don't have to make him a setup man for Wood in a couple of years. Far better that he spends a short amount of time in the pen now then we have to convert him permanently into a pen arm later, because starters are more valuable than pen arms.

Also, if we're trying to get Hawpe, maybe Marshall/Jones/1st-round-pick gets it done, and we don't have to give up on someone with as little injury history, as much potential, and who is as close to the majors as Hill is.

There is no trading of draft picks.

By the rules? Or are you saying that trading a draft pick would be a Bad Thing?

Hill is not going to be traded, he is insurance for Zambrano going to the NY under a $200M contract next year.

That said, Prior is not going to pitch until he is actually healthy and effective because what I said above.

Miller is small potatoes, he might start 5 or 6 games and then be long relief like Rusch was last year.

Marshall has to learn to pitch an effective slider or cutter or both, Marmol has to hit the strike zone more than 50%.

Guzman is not going to have a break out year, he is hurt and Mateo and Ryu belong in a small market. As for the rest look for Gallagher to emerge with a slider this year and make the Cubs feel okay about losing Zambrano to the Yankees after beating them in the WS

Considering he's currently pitching in winter ball...

What ever happened to the "I wouldn't trade Hill for Dunn, straight up" Hendry of last offseason?

How many times has this been quoted and responded to in the past couple days?!?
