Octavio Dotel-R-Yankees Dec. 7 - 9:12 pm et

Octavio Dotel and the Royals have reportedly agreed to a one-year, $5 million contract.

Dotel, who will go into the closer's role, can make an extra $2 million in incentives. A healthy Dotel is a terrific reliever, but he showed little last season after returning from Tommy John surgery. It's another risky pickup for a Royals team still likely to finish in fifth place, but this one won't hurt in 2008 and beyond if it doesn't work out.

Thats a lot of money for a guy who just had TMJ and was bad last year when he came back. Remember when everyone was complaining about Howry and Eyre getting $4mil. Oh, how the times have changed

Hendry somewhat set the market for these relief pitchers...

Doesn't that mean his jaw clicks? I can't see how that would affect his pitching...

Time to put together a package of toolsy position players and pitchers with good stuff for DeJesus.

I don't disagree. been saying that since June. but I don't understand why now is the time.

Because now it's becoming more clear how much Moore values guys that have the physical makeup to be great players, even if the performance aspect isn't there.

might as well spend the money i guess, and it's not like a one year deal is going to kill them or anything, but i still dont quite understand why you give dotel 5 million dollars.

What the hell are the Royals doing?!?!?!

Not filling up roster spots (ie blocking prospects) with longterm unmovable contracts while rebuilding their farm system.

Guys like Meche are token gestures to the fan base. If he pans out, great. If not, no big deal.

The Royals are in a unique position, similar to the Tigers following their 119 loss season. Everyone decried them for wasting money on Pudge, Rondell White, Vina, and Urbina. What's the point, they're not gonna win anything, and won't win anything as long as those guys are under contract. They said the same thing the next year when Ordonez signed. (And yeah that Ordonez contract is still insane.) But when you're a historically terrible team, you have to overpay and bring in somebody otherwise your fans will flat out abandon you. Was Meche the best guy to blow 11M on? Not at all, but there's no guarantee that the guys who signed for similar money would take any sort of money to go to the hellhole that is their franchise.

KC has to show their fans that they are trying to improve, and not just sitting back content with 100 loss seasons. KC has money to burn just like every other major league team, and there's only so much money you can pour into scouting in the US and abroad.

I'm not saying the Royals are going to be the next Tigers, there is a miniscule chance of that, but if you think they'd be handcuffed by Meche 4 years down the road as they try to keep Teahen on the team, where do you think they'd be 4 years down the road if they remained a 100 loss team every year. There comes a point where every fan just has enough. It's not as if the Royals are a pitching rich organization. Their minor league pitching stinks. Meche won't be blocking anybody of importance, and has a nonzero chance of actually being productive. This isn't the Pirates trading for Sean Casey while Craig Wilson rots. Or signing Randall Simon while Craig Wilson rots, or Daryle Ward for Craig Wilson TWICE. Sorry Jake.

People complain constantly about small market teams pocketing their money, and now that they spend it, their GM is stupid.

Hochevar, Greinke, Lumsden, and Buckner. I would rather have Hochevar than most of our minor league arms.

Southside is right. They feel now is the time to make a few moves and gear up for a run over the next few years. It won't be easy, but they have a lot of youth that is getting ready to step up to the bigs.

Yeah but the Tigers signed former All Stars like Pudge and Ordonez. Neither Dotel nor Meche are sniffing an all star game in their careers IMO

From 2001-2003, Dotel was a dominant reliever. It's not like he's never had success. He's most likely a big improvement over any other reliver the Royals trotted out to the mound in 2006. The best reliever they had with over 50 IP this season was Todd freaking Wellemeyer.

Yeah but hes still recovering from TJS. There were a lot of more dire needs they could spend $5 million on then Dotel IMO
