Hold on a sec...

I know this is terrible news for you guys, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is not a credible source? This is from an article by the Cardinals beat writer in a top 15 circulation newspaper in the country.

A few reasons why I think this is legit:

1) the Dispatch submits it's online articles at midnight, so this is before most sources would pick it up on the wire. They are more concerned with making deadline at that point.

2) The Post-Dispatch is a major national newspaper and Strauss rarely jumps the gun.

It's possible that this is all a cruel joke and he jumped the gun, but I'm sorry; I doubt it.

The SLPD might generally a reliable paper, but it's a St L paper. I would be skeptical about any Chicago (or NY, or whatever) paper conflicting with a St Louis paper regarding what the Cardinals are doing. It's not that they're unreliable, it's that they're not embedded in Chicago. They're source most likely is someone in St Louis who is not involved in the negotiations. What they probably got is some Cards insider who heard what his agent told another team he may be negotiating with to get a better deal.

Local reporters in Chicago with better inroads into Chicago dealings said they were looking at a 1 year deal for a few million. 3/28 defies common sense. 3/28 sounds like something Boras would state his client is looking for just as the market is opening up, ala Beltran for 7/200 a couple of years ago.

wolf stansson;

As Jericho mention, would you believe Chicago papers on rumors dealing with the Cardinals? For example if the DailyHerald is reporting...the Cards are planning to extend Braden Looperi ( hypothetically speaking) 5 yrs at nearly $11 mill per, would you believe Chicago papers, or St. Louis papers who have them extended 2 yrs at $8 mill?

You see where we are getting at? Not saying St. Lou papers aren't legit, but they aren't totally reliable when it comes to rumors about the Cubs.

Besides Bruce Miles over at DailyHerald is saying there is a offer on the table that is for 1 yr with an vesting option, which totally blows St. Lou "rumors" out of the water.

Wow. How does Marquis get the idea that its okay for him to dare to seek at least $10 million annually?

Adam Eaton.

It does seem odd that Strauss is reporting this as a done deal, though it isn't showing up anywhere else.

I think he's anxious to break this story, as Cards fans are treating this with absolute glee. If I were them, I would too!

I know this offseason is causing everyone to reassess what players are worth, especially mediocre ones, but 3/28 is outrageous by any stretch.

Any GM that would give it to him.

bruce miles today on the Marquis deal:

"if the Cubs reach a deal with Marquis, chances are it would contain at least one option year and perhaps “vesting” options that would kick in if Marquis reaches certain goals. "

doesnt sound like a done deal to me and certainly not for 3 years & 28 million.

Could it be a deal, where if all vesting options kick in and performance bonuses are reached, then it could come to 3/28? That's possible. I just can't fathom how he'd get 3/$28 guaranteed.

Marquis has to be receptive towards Rothschild, it could potentially be the perfect fit for Marquis if he doesn't get his own way.

Can't believe I have to mention that after he's worked with Mazzone and Duncan.

But... the strength of Marquis is his slider and 2 seam FB. Those two pitches are Rothschild's signature pitches as a PC as far as getting the most out of a guy with those strengths. Right now, Marquis wants to throw his curve too much as well as his 4 seamer.

I've questioned Marquis' approach to the game, whether it has been his relationships with his PCs as well as his complaining about not being in the rotation on '04 during the playoffs. He has more talent than what he has produced.

He has to become a Matt Clement type (movement FB and slider 95% of all pitches) to be somewhat effective again. Hitters have hit .300 off of his curve, if you can't prevent hitters from hitting .300 on a breaking pitch, time to scrap it.

That 3/28 seems way too high, even in the current market.

I don't have the money figures, but you can pretty much count on this deal being done. Somebody wanted the Cubs to upgrade their offense. They just have _ with Marquis.

Three years and $28 million could indeed be true. This is the kind of market it is right now.

Wow!! Thanks for the info. Kind of depressing but good to hear it from a source we all know and trust.

Wow! Just shows how desperate teams are to get pitching. I'm thinking of picking up the ball again....

Thanks for the input Bruce.

Any word on Suppan? Rumor had it that the Cubs were pursuing him.

I don't think so now.

Thanks Bruce.

Sounds like:

Z

Lilly

Hill

Marquis

Prior/Miller/Marshall

Does. Not. Compute.

Unless there is another impact acquisition made on offense, seems like a whole lot of money spent without much improvement.

I know this was a joke, but what happens if Miller and Prior are pitching well, do we go to a 6 man rotation? Trade someone at the deadline?

puke :-&

This signing blows if indeed true. Living in St Louis, I can tell you that the problems Marquis is having is not within his mechanics - he's a head case. For a couple million bucks, he'd be worth the risk. But for this kinda $, I would've much rather seen the kids battle out a spot.

Hopefully Marquis fixes what was wrong with him last season. He can be pretty damn solid if he does. I'm not opposed to this at all.

Wow, Hendry is really emulating St. Louis now, just like he did the White Sox last year and the Red Sox the year before.

Power hitting OF to go along with power hitter 1B and 3B. 1 Staff ace followed by 3 mediocre to bad veterans and 1 young pitcher with potential.
