I guess I fail to see the robbery.

If you wish to use hindsight in viewing trades, I suppose I could see where you miss the robbery.

I admit that the Cubs front office is more to blame for these deals than the Orioles. They couldn't have reduced the value of the those two players any more than they did prior to their trades.

Whhat else should you use besides hindsight? Isn't that how all trades are ultimately judged?

Corey Patterson reduced his own value, the Cubs didn't have to do anymore. Same with Sosa.

Neither deal should have been made. Period. They were better off keeping them than giving them away for next to nothing.

Patterson on our bench last year instead of Bynum or Pagan would be better than trading him for the two prospects that will never amount to anything.

Sosa could have netted someone like Cliff Floyd if the front office didn't do everything possible to destroy his image. Besides ruining his trade value, he also pounced on a crappy offer just to be out from under the Sosa deal.

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry can't wait to get to the winter meetings in Orlando, Fla. -- and not just for the weather.

In fact, Hendry probably can see sunshine on a cloudy day with the type of offseason he's enjoying.

This qote worries me. Hendry has acquired one bat and is going to play him out of position, that's it.

The Cubs are not a good team right now.

It's 12:25 and no deals yet? Come on Jim I'm growing impatient.

Yeah, I'd much rather be discussing new deals than reminisce about old, crappy deals. :D

Shhhhhhhhhh, it feels better to pretend great things have happened, and are happening.

although you are exactly right

I'm really starting to think the Cubs are going to wind up with Ted Lilly.

Lilly's agent and J.P. Ricciardi have both acknowledged that the Cubs are the frontrunners.

Is Lilly worth $11 million per year?

No, but none of the FA pitcher are worth what they will be paid. Plus his game is poorly suited to Wrigley. Meche, Jennings, Westbrook and Padilla are all better options.

The Cubs ruined Sosa's image? More so than Sammy did himself? As an organization you hold each player accountable for their professionalism. Sosa just couldn't wait a few more hours to leave the clubhouse? I think walking out on your team and organization does enough damage.

Sammy did himself in.

Lilly probably shouldn't make anymore than 8m per.

Overpay Lilly by 3m a year or overpay Jason Schmidt by 3m per?

Schmidt, all day long.

No.

But apparently that is the rate for mediocre pitchers.

Who exactly exposed to the world that Sammy left the clubhouse early?

Hmmmm.

I'll bet that Sammy isn't the first guy to walk out of a club house early. While it is very unprofessional of Sammy to walk out, a front office that would play the same game is even more unprofessional.

As well they should have.

Bottom line is that he left, it all goes back to Sammy's actions regardless of what the Cubs do or don't say.

You think it's a good idea to completely destroy a guy's trade value by exposing a dumb move on a player's part, that's you opinion. It certainly isn't mine. It would have been much better to handle the situation privately, and then traded his ass to another team for decent value in return, meanwhile not paying almost his entire salary to play elsewhere.

I'm really done with this argument. It has nothing to do with the Winter Meetings.

I know I'm not a mod, but can the Sosa discussion move to a different thread? Not only is it not Winter Meetings related, but it's old news and rehash.

No need, I'm finished with it.

Apologize for the distraction.

For Sammy's part, he claims he asked for and received permission to leave. I have no clue. But this incident wasn't the only thing that tarnished his image anyway.

On to '07.

Question...

Who is going to have a tremendous Christmas gift?

Gil Meche

• 12:15 p.m.: Ted Lilly is rumored to be signing with the Cubs.

• 12:15 p.m.: The Cubs are dangling right fielder Jacque Jones.

That's not a lot of information, but it's something.

So what does everyone think about Lilly?

Isn't he a bit of a mismatch for Wrigley, being a flyball pitcher and all? Maybe I'm not seeing it right.

Should be an upgrade regardless, albeit an expensive one.

Looks like Lilly will be a Cub. Hendry probably outbid himself to get him too.

Zambrano

Hill

Lilly

Miller

Prior/Mateo/Marmol/Guzman

as it stands right now. I'm just worried we are going to be relying a little too much on Hill to be good
