Why don't we wait until something is announced before hitting the panic button?

Why do people always tell others how to feel with regards to the direction the Cubs are going? The Cubs, and Hendry specifically, have repeatedly shown poor decision making ability and priorities in personel matters, especially during the offseason. The time to panic was years ago. It's time for Hendry to do a 180 and make some smart decisions. Before that happens people have the right to feel however they want about what he is going to do.

I know they have poor decision making in their history. I'm not telling people how to feel per se, but people who react to an article that provides NO NEW INFORMATION and is filled with spin that it SOUNDS LIKE they both MIGHT sign here.... is a bit much.

A lot of what is reported is from the agents. We don't know what negotiations are going on, and who is close to what. I plan on waiting until something is official before bemoaning the move(s).

Levine reports the Cubs are still pursuing Lilly and Schmidt.

Works for me

Yup, if we got Schmidt, that completely changes my desire for Lilly. I'd bring him on as a 4th-5th starter if the rest of our rotation is Zambrano/Schmidt/Hill/Miller (or Prior)

Gotten to the point where it's like the little boy who cried wolf. They keep saying it and saying it, but there's nothing actually happening.

I agree. If we get Schmidt, the rest would almost be icing on the cake. Whether it be Lilly, Meche, Duke, Jennings it wouldn't matter, even though I have preferences.

Though I'm still not thrilled about what Lily would cost.

The White Sox are reportedly asking for John Lackey from the Angels for Joe Crede.

I would be very upset if the Sox ended up with my favorite pitcher.

The Angels can't be that desperate for mediocre 3B production.

Why would the Sox want another starter? That rumor seems unrealistic

ugh. they should have just used that money ear-marked for Lilly and Meche and used it to get Drew. then trade for some SP.

I like Drew, but no way in hell would I have given him 5/70 guaranteed.

It's better then handing out $18-$20 per year for the tandum of Meche and Lilly.

I just hope they're not going after both.

History is why people are panicing. We were told not to panic when Chicago started outbidding Pittsburgh for Jeromy Burnitz. The Cubs signed him. We were told not to panic about the possibility of trading prospects for a 1 year rental, mediocre talent Juan Pierre. The Cubs got him.

The list is long. Instead of reading Lilly and Meche rumors all day long, we want to read Schmidt rumors all day long. When we don't see Schmidt rumors, we panic.

If they got Drew they'd still be 2-3 pitchers short.

Is Meche going to do any better then Guzman, Marshall, Dempster or Cotts? Probably not, IMO. Certainly not when you consider the cost. Meche is horrible.

Lilly may be able to put together a respectable year, I don't know, but I wouldn't be willing to gamble 4/40 (let alone 5/55) on it.

I don't know about horrible. Over the last 3 years he's had a 3.88 average in day games (26 starts)...league adjusted that's probably closer to the 3.4-3.5 range. I'm not saying he's an all star, but he's not "horrible".

He also has a 5.31 era away from the pitchers haven known as safeco.

That's because of his 2.61 ERA in day games in 2004. He's gone 4.59 in 2005 and 4.12 in 2006 in day games. Maybe "horrible" isn't the right word. But he's not good.

I honestly believe the Cubs have in-house options that are better then Meche.

So, since Monday morning, how's everyone's work productivity been at the office? On a scale of 1-10 (1 poorest, 10 best) mine's at about -27.

If you can honestly look at the numbers that Marshall, Gooz and company posted and Dempster posted when he last was a starter and say that, you must see something I don't.
