Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — The Chicago Cubs moved to the forefront of the Ted Lilly sweepstakes Tuesday, according to the agent for the former Toronto Blue Jays left-hander.

The Blue Jays had tabled what Larry O'Brien had termed a "competitive" offer late Monday night, but his meetings with the Cubs on Tuesday afternoon changed the equation.

"Our talks with the Cubs are becoming more advanced," he told a throng of reporters. "They've indictated that they're willing to pay what needs to be paid."

I'd bet this gets done in the next 24 hours. Hopefully it doesn't cost us Schmidt.

If the cubs had any intention of getting him in the first place, it shouldn't. If the lily deal does get done, I predict some other team scoops up meche shortly after leaving Jennings and Scmidt as our final two avenues for pitchers.

Meche's "heart" is telling him Chicago, but as of right now the Jays have the highest offer on the table. As for Lilly, all things being equal (i.e. if the Jays and Cubs have identical offers), he will stay with Toronto.

The top two suitors for Lilly are the Cubs and Jays, while Meche's top three are the Cubs, Jays and (wait for it...) Royals. The Royals are apparently talking 4/36 for Meche.

This is from the scout.com Bluejays site which has updates pretty often (you have to be a member to read though). Nothing huge but any news is news.

They mentioned Meche could decide by tonight. No clue who the people are or if reliable but I think they are in Orl.

This is worse than Lilly. Take the money, Gil. The Canadian money.

I doubt Jim goes after a Jennings or a Schmidt, if we end up with Lilly.

I really hope Hendry doesn't go after Jennings, either. He is not very impressive. You could have probably had him for next to nothing last year.

We could've also had Manny for nothing when he was placed on irrevocable waivers. All we would've had to do was take on his contract.

From Rosenthal,

Larry O'Brien, the agent for the left-handed Lilly, said early Tuesday night that he is continuing to negotiate with four teams — the Cubs, Blue Jays, Yankees and Giants.

"All four of those clubs should be in the mix," O'Brien said. "I would think sometime in the next 48 hours we should have a better handle on this."

He's a great option for the 4th Starter slot. Alot better than hoping guz, marshall, or some other young guy pans out.

Looks like Hendry made a run at Padilla.

Free-agent right-hander Vicente Padilla received four-year interest from the Cardinals and Cubs before agreeing to his three-year, $34 million deal with the Rangers.

That makes two pitchers that the Cubs and Cards have missed out on together (Wolf). I think Schmidt will be 3. I think for us to get him Hendry would've had to swoop in and steal him early like with Soriano.

well Its good to know he atleast tried...It looks like hes going to let no one else get Lilly but him

The Cubs have reportedly tweaked their previous offer to Ted Lilly, who could settle on a new team before the close of the winter meetings.

Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown said this afternoon that a deal between the Cubs and Lilly remains likely. The Jays have joined the Cubs in offering Lilly a four-year deal, and the Mariners, Giants and Yankees are also supposed to be in the mix. Still, it's looked like Lilly to the Cubs for about two days now.

Why the hell cant he be like this for Schimt??

The Cubs and Rangers are pursuing free-agent center fielder Kenny Lofton.

The Cubs apparently have decided not to sign free agent Julio Lugo to play center, and want Lofton to be a stopgap until top prospect Felix Pie is ready.

Confirmation from the article earlier this week.

I think if the deal are competitive, I think Lofton returns home.

Its possible that Schimdt is really not interested in playing anywhere other than the west coast and is making obsene demands from any other clubs. You never know what the situation is. If he doesnt want to play for us there really is only so much Jim can do to try to change his mind.

Dammit, Lilly sucks

Agreed.

care to back this up?

His only two good years (02 and 04) he had BABIPs 70 points and 40 points lower than his LD% would have predicted as well as LOB% higher than league average and well above his other years.

Hendry said that? I thought he wouldn't be able to comment on Jennings, since he is under contract with another team. Is that tampering?

OK, so that suggests that during the two years that he was significantly above-average (120 ERA+ each year), he was lucky. So again - where is the evidence that he sucks?
