Seriously, from the look of those highlights I wonder why the guy only won 11 last year.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking his highlight reel didn't show very many of his 84 BB or 24 HR allowed.

Go look at his highlights on mlb.com. The guy has a curveball that is incredible. Also has a fastball up to 94MPH a good slider and a change up.

I just became a Meche fan.

Angel Guzman?

:)

Yeah, but Guzman doesn't have his experience. Seriously, from the look of those highlights I wonder why the guy only won 11 last year. He really has great stuff from the llok of them.

His win total is insignificant. It's the rest of his totals that make him not good. You do realize he's not good, don't you? Here's proof in case you need it:

I don't like where this is going. I would much rather see Schmidt and Batista than Lilly and Meche

So would everybody else, but Schmidt and Batista will cost $5M per year more than Meche and Lilly. I'm sure if the Cubs don't get Schmidt, that it won't be because they don't think he's a good pitcher.

Unfortunately, (and I hope they are wrong) the SunTimes is making is sound like the Cubs will eventually sign Meche AND Lilly. Which coupled with not signing Schmidt, would be baseball's double whammy.

Hendry has always liked stuff and body type over actual effectiveness. And he doesn't care if guys give up lots of walks. It's the mirror image of his weakness for position players, where he likes tools and physical talent over actual production, and doesn't care for guys who take lots of walks.

This is so silly. If you are going to overpay for someone, overpay for the best guy out there. Not the mediocre guy.

Maybe the Best guy doesn't want to come here?

That's exactly what I'm thinking. He wants West Coast and that may be the deciding factor. Some players (albeit rare), think more about location, family rather than $.

I can dig up quotes where Schmidt has stated that he has interest in St. Louis and Chicago.

When I hear that Schmidt turned down 2 years/36m, then I'll believe he just didn't want to be here.

Lilly and Meche are lucky to be 8m a year pitchers. The offers for those guys are getting closer to 11m. Instead of giving these guys 3m, add it on to Schmidt's deal and see if he still wants to pitch on the West Coast.

If I don't hear that Hendry offered 18m, I'll be convinced he didn't do enough to get him. If St. Louis gets him for between 15m-18m, I'll guarantee you I'll be thoroughly pissed.

if meche wasn't somehow labeled as having good potential and great stuff, he'd be signing a minor league deal somewhere. instead he's going to get $40 mil.

Isn't it also true that he can be saying he'd go to the cubs or the cardinals to merely help drive up his price? So he really has no intent of coming here but he wants to get as much money as possible out of the Dodgers, Giants, and Mariners.

OK, I just researched for about 40 minutes...I can't figure out for the life of my why Gil Meche is desired so strongly. I know supposedly is an underachiever or something, but why?? What in his career shows us that he is going to every pan out?

he threw 97 back in 2000 before he tore apart his shoulder.

Just to add. I know in no way want Lilly and Meche. I can deal with having one of them at 10 mil a year. Granted I think it is way too much for either pitcher. I would much rather have paid AJ Burnett 5/55 last year then eitehr one of these guys even 8 million a year.

Please do?

Per Rotoworld:

The Brewers kicked the tires on free agent Jason Schmidt, but they got the idea he wasn't interested in playing in Milwaukee.

Schmidt would prefer to stay on the West Coast, though he is believed to be considering the Cubs and Cardinals.

Nice! So we are getting the 2000 version right?.....RIGHT?

That could be true. But I'd like to hear just one confirmed report that we made an offer to Schmidt. Just one. So far we haven't yet. And I don't consider anything Jason Whitlock says a "confirmed report".

I am of the opinion that starting pitching is a crap shoot. Every year teams that make the playoffs have starters that have career, or near career, or finally healthy years. The # of pitchers that you count on YEAR IN AND YEAR out is tiny. In most instances I think you have to have one or starters who provided you better than expected performance (and stayed healthy). THe guys we are talking about, Meche, Lilly, Schmidt all seem to fit that bill. Warm bodies who could overacheive

That's Rotoworld's speculation based on the rumors that the Cubs had offers on the table. A quote from ROTOWORLD that he is "believed to be considering" is far from a quote "where Schmidt has stated that he has interest in Chicago." I'm not trying to start an argument here but I don't believe such a quote exists. Anything out of Schmidt's mouth has been that he wants to stay in the West Coast or go back home to Seattle. The best we've had is rumored offers that were subsequently shot down. If you think someone in Schmidt's party has said otherwise, please do find it.

Again, Per Rotoworld:

The Cardinals are targeting free agent Jason Schmidt, though they may not go beyond three years to sign him.

"There's a question of how far we go, but we're going," GM Walt Jocketty said. "We'd like to have him." Agent Randy Hendricks said Schmidt was receptive to St. Louis, and that the team's reluctance to go beyond three years wouldn't be much of a problem. However, it appears likely that Schmidt will get $60 million over four years from some team, perhaps the Cubs or the Dodgers.

This is a direct quote. Last time I looked, St. Louis was not on the west coast or anywhere near Seattle.

Sure, it's St. Louis rather than Chicago. But, I've yet to see the Cubs get blown off as quickly as Milwaukee did. Therefore, I'm not willing to assume Schmidt has no interest in the money the Cubs seem to have readily available to hand out.

I'm starting to think that Schmidt all along has wanted to goto the West Coast, but obviously his agent is not going to eliminate 80% of the teams from competing (BIDDING) for his services. However, the midwest teams might end up bidding the Mariners, Dodgers, etc. out of contention and he might end up afterall in the midwest. Which side of I-55 will he end up on though?
