Funny... a few weeks ago, I suggested 3/24 and got laughed at for "overpaying."

It is definitely overpaying, whether you suggested it or Boston offered it.

Matsuzaka, Drew, and Lugo...

The Red Sox have gotten everybody I really wanted off the free agent market this season, aside from Aramis.

Schmidt, Soriano and Church would keep me from getting too angry.

...or perhaps there are some on this message board who don't have a firm grasp on the current market situation?

co-sign

EDIT: But Mr. Church would not care for me as a Cubs fan b/c I am a Jew and thus destined for damnation. Actually I am Cubs fan and therefore already in pergatory, so Mr. Church has little to worry about.

Agreed.

Also, cutting Izturis and putting Theriot as the starting SS would go a long ways.

Rotoworld seemed to think Boston might try to move Crisp. Think hes another option for the Cubs?

My guess is the asking price would be too high since they really don't HAVE to get rid of Crisp - on the other hand, if the cost is low (since he had a down year last year), I'd take Crisp in a heartbeat. He's basically Juan Pierre with much more potential and we'd be getting him when his value is the lowest.

I dont know who laughed at you but the rumors from the very beginning of the offseason were 4/32, so I don't see how 3/24 was that earth shattering of a prediction. Considering the SS market next offseason, this is a very very good move if they dont want to use Pedoria there.

That's not overpaying. What did Pierre get again? Lugo's contract is very reasonable in this market.

Actually he would care about you more because he wants you to be saved.

Maybe in this mkt, but I am not sure I'd want him for that price.

The Sox saving us for the second time in one evening. Thank God yet again.

As ESPN said earlier, do the Cubs really think they can win this year? I agree with them. Put Lofton in CF for 1 year and let Pie develop. If he cant, 5 of the top 8 CFs in the game are FAs next season. So we could be more selective than just settling for a problem.

I wonder if getting Lugo will have any impact on the Manny trade situation. Word in Boston is that Epstein is serious that if nothing gets done by the end of the day tomorrow, they're going to stop actively working on moving Manny and pursue other needs (like a closer). Theo said they will listen to offers on Manny after tomorrow, but it'll have to be proposed by the other team.

Strictly as a fan of baseball, I'm curious to see what's going to happen here.

Do you ever think to yourself, "what could Manny Ramirez be if he had the heart, drive and desire of Pete Rose to go along with his talent?"

Again, if we're not going to go for it in the next 2 years, we need to trade off everyone on the whole dang team. Sitting around and waiting for farm kids to develop is a waste of Lee, Aram, Big Z, etc in their peak years.

I think that's out of line. Everyone here realizes what the market situation is. Regardless of what the market situation is, 9/36 is overpaying. Plain and simple. Look up Julio Lugo's stats and tell me he's worth 9m a year, because he's not.

I wanted Lugo. I like his abilities. But, for 9m, no thanks.

Take that extra money and offer it to Schmidt. Trade for Ryan Church to play CF and let Boston deal with Lugo for the next 4 years.

But, save the high and mighty talk. It doesn't become you.

What other SS do you want? I don't see any decent ones available. It's not like we have a decent SS in our farm system (yeah, I'm looking at you Ronny).

I really wasn't interested in Lugo for CF. He only made sense if he was replacing Izturis, and even then he was probably too expensive an option for what he provides.
