Another "quality" reporter: Steve Phillips on SportsCenter just said the Cubs are trying to land Lilly and Meche this week.

Thats more likely, instead of gettting at least 1 good starter we are going to get 1 mediocre and 1 sucky and over pay for both.

I know it. I'm getting that feeling when this whole thing is over Cub fans are going to feel like they've been punched in the gut.

AGAIN!

Should we be worried about the...Brewers?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/12/05/meetings.notes/index.html

The Mariners and Dodgers have been viewed as co-favorites for Schmidt, who already has turned away the Yankees and is thought to want to remain on the West Coast. The Padres had looked into Schmidt but are probably out of that derby assuming they finalize a Maddux deal. The Cubs, who are also chasing Ted Lilly, also have shown interest.

But the real surprise team in the Schmidt derby is the Brewers. A person familiar with the talks told SI.com that Milwaukee inquired about Schmidt's willingness to come there and hasn't been told no yet so it may also make an offer. The Schmidt sweepstakes is not expected to drag on too much longer.

Interestingly, the Giants, who have money to spend, don't appear to be as aggressively pursuing Schmidt as the others.

The Brewers kicked the tires on free agent Jason Schmidt, but they got the idea he wasn't interested in playing in Milwaukee.

Schmidt would prefer to stay on the West Coast, though he is believed to be considering the Cubs and Cardinals.

All I know about Jason Whitlock is that he once wrote a column where he called former Indiana basketball coach Mike Davis a "coaching genius." His credibility is kind of a non-starter for me.

I'm pretty certain he also wrote a piece about Mike Davis' undoing and his refusal to respect the significance of emphasizing in-state recruiting. Every columnist has his/her overly biased opinion rants, but I liked reading the majority of his work.

You are right, that he did, and it was a good column. I was relieved to see he didn't fall into that "those IU fans are all racist rednecks" trap. But I am referring to an earlier column, I think it was around the time Davis had one of his celebrated Kentucky blowups. His column was something like: "Cmon' Mike you are a basketball genius, you don't need to do that stuff." As an avid IU fan, I really have trouble taking seriously a sportswriter who calls him a coaching genius.

They just have to get our hopes up, don't they?

Let's just give Schmidt a 2/36 contract. We have the bucks and there's no long term commitment.

If I'm Schmidt, I take that deal. I highly doubt anyone else would give him 18 mil per year, and it leaves open the option of a return to the west coast/ Seattle to close out his career.

Git er done Jim, git er done.

well at least for those of us wondering what Jim is doing there.... we know one thing Sweet Lou is there with him...

The Cubs.com article (another thread i think) says that our preference goes: Lilly, then Schmidt, then Meche.

Does this mean Lilly is more affordable, or they like Lilly better?

Probably they think they have a better chance at landing Lilly.

I honestly don't see how Hendry can go more years to an inferior pitcher. What's the fascination with Ted freaking Lilly? He's not a slug, but 4/44 for a #4 starter is just too much if you can get a genuine #2 starter for roughly the same money over fewer years.

Here's hoping that Toronto forces Hendry's hand and takes Lilly off the table. If he does, I think Hendry pretty much MUST go for broke with Schmidt, and that's what most all of us have wanted all along anyways.

I can actually already see it now. Schmidt will sign for a reasonable deal for the market (14-15 million per) with a West Coast team, and then people will be upset that we didn't match. I just have no idea if Schmidt would take that from us specifically, and it's hard to tell how high we'd actually have to go to make the extra money worth it to him. That's not to say that Hendry shouldn't go hard after him-he should, but I'm not sure that anything can really be gleaned from the contract if it is to a West Coast team, because there is a decent possibility he turned down a larger contract from somewhere else.

The Cardinals are targeting free agent Jason Schmidt, though they may not go beyond three years to sign him.

"There's a question of how far we go, but we're going," GM Walt Jocketty said. "We'd like to have him." Agent Randy Hendricks said Schmidt was receptive to St. Louis, and that the team's reluctance to go beyond three years wouldn't be much of a problem. However, it appears likely that Schmidt will get $60 million over four years from some team, perhaps the Cubs or the Dodgers.

Sounds like nothing really is going on and it is all old news / speculation.

If he was so content, why isn't he signed already?

Seattle is interested, yet they don't have him locked down. Rumor has it they are currently seeking out cheaper options.

You do bring up a good point that he's not willing to sign any type of hometown discount-my guess is that he's got a number that is reasonable, and none of those teams have matched it yet. Some teams not on the West Coast have probably matched it already, and now he's waiting to see if the bidding goes up or a team on the West Coast matches that figure. If not, he may come to a team like the Cubs. That's speculation, I know, but it seems reasonable considering most of his quotes and his behvior.

I would be willing to make a deal like 3/48 for him in this market, that's for sure-I hope Hendry is also. I just wonder if our location is going to hurt us enough to lose the deal if a 3/42 deal comes from a team in one of his preferred locations.
