Could this be Kenny Williams waiting in the weeds, under the radar, and ready to pounce? That kind of trade would send a message to Detroit.

Brian Anderson or Ryan Sweeney or Jerry Owens and a starting pitcher (Kenny will dangle Garcia or Buehrle, but if I was Riccardi I would want Garland or Contreras since they're under contract for more than 1 season)?

Contreras has a no trade clause, and I think Garland does too

Are you sure? Cot's has nothing listed for either.

Garland had a NTC for the first year of his latest contract (2006) only -- not sure if the Sox gave Contreras a similar 1 year NTC to re-sign.

Just listening to Kenny talk, I think something like Wells would be the only thing that would interest him.

He's been talking like he wants no part of this free agent market, and only a very serious offer for one of his pitchers will do. And I believe him; I don't believe he's playing rope-a-dope.

Wells would be an ideal fit for the Sox and if would one of the their expendable top OF prospects as well as an expendable starting pitcher, it has the makings to help out both teams.

If I was a Sox fan, I would be thrilled for the rumors of Wells on the Southside.

why do we care about White Sox trade rumors again?

I need to know the names of the players I might be hating next season.

Williams is playing the same game that the agents play.....trying to drive up the price. There is no way the White Sox start the season with the same 5 starters and Brandon McCarthy starting at AAA like Williams mentioned in today's Tribune. The Sox have a few holes and 5 experienced starters, a very good young pitcher to replace one of them, and 25 teams looking for starting pitchers. KW is playing rope-a-dope.

Here's a question: What is the convenional wisdom suggest - does Toronto do better if they trade him now or if they wait until the July deadline? By "do better" I mean get the most return.

Honestly, I think at the deadline. I think the needs of teams are larger the closer it gets to the end of the season. You don't see a lot of big name prospects changing teams in the offseason. It's at the deadline when teams are desperate to make a push and know their team isn't good enough as it is. I think most teams without payroll issues and absolute black holes on their starting roster and rotation are ok with competing with what they have now. Once the games are played, teams will know what their needs are and if they are contenders or not.

You're probably right, but a player like Wells sure could help a team for the first half of the season too. With him from day one, you might not be as desperate for help at the deadline.

Yeah, but a lot of GMs don't think that way. They get to the trade deadline with their team a game or two lead in their division, and they say to themselves "Vernon Wells is an impact player, this is what we need to get us over the top." People get a lot more desperate at the deadline and are a lot more likely to see a guy as the missing piece to the championship puzzle.

Aaron Rowand might be headed back to Chicago. Rowand and Floyd for Garica would be something Williams would probably bite on.

Floyd really doesn't have much in the way of value any longer. If I were Kenny I'd throw in Crede to try and get Hamels.

Well considering the Phills turned down a Hamels for Baldelli a few days ago, I HIGHLY doubt Philly is willing to part with Hamels to get Garcia/Crede, just as the Angels are not willing to part with Santana.

I doubt untouchable is the word.

Ryan Sweeney, Crede, Vasquez and Garcia would probably get Hamels and Rowand.

That'd be a steal for the sox.

Hamels can deal it.

I know. I love me some Hamels.

Although, Gillick has unexplainable love and hate for certain players. I kinda hope he hates Hamels as he hated Abreu and Burrell... so maybe that's clouding my judgement. It's just as likely he's absolutely in love with him and wouldn't give him up for Cabrera.

Don't bank on it. Burrell and Abreu were both 13m+

Hamels is less than a million.
