This thread sucks more than the Radke thread.

Nice try, but not quite. :D

I will admit, just about every time I see this thread title, I think about the Vlady, Beltran, Drew, Tejada, Giles signings that the Cubs didn't make and think that's what this thread is about, making amends on all the stupid signings and trades like Burnitz, Neifi, Glendon and Pierre, but no.....

It's all about the Merck.

There isn't a rule preventing a team signing a player as some sort of Player/Manager, a la Pete Rose, is there?

I wonder if Lou Piniella would be ok with stepping down to the role of bench coach, to allow Kent to rightfully manage us to the World Series?

bad news, mercker lovers.

I just did some figuring. Apparently, we've been overstating his value to a certain extent. According to some of the most recent projections I've come across, Kent would likely add only 25-30 wins to the Cubs in 2007, a far cry from the 44 he contributed in 2004. Obviously, he's still the most valuable free agent on the market, but the Cubs will have to consider fielding a team near replacement level around him if they hope to win 100 games.

Mark Prior? No.

Kerry Wood? No.

Randy Johnson? Yes.

Carlos Zambrano? No.

Ted Lilly? No.

Kent Mercker? Yes.

Jason Schmidt? No.

Rich Hill? No.

Wade Miller? No.

If someone can guess what the question being asked is, then you know why Mercker is good for the Cubs. He has the ability to get butts in seats something the tribune didn't see late in the season.

Another stupid move by Krivsky. The question now is whether Hendry is actually smart enough to offer a better deal.

Get it done Jimbo.

Maybe Mercker as player/GM ala Woody English is a better idea ...

That's a great idea.

Hmm... Perhaps GMs are hesitant to offer Mercker contracts because they fear for their own job security.
