Hendry also has set his sights on outfielder Cliff Floyd, 33, for left-handed help off the bench. Floyd, a Chicago native who starred at Thornwood High School in South Holland, was limited to 97 games for the New York Mets last season because of a sprained left ankle and Achilles tendinitis. Floyd made $6.75 million last season, hitting .244 with 11 home runs and 44 RBI for the NL East champion Mets. He has been a longtime favorite of Hendry's.

Detroit would be a nice fit for Floyd. He can platoon with Monroe, and DH, and give the Tigers more options next yr. So I highly doubt Floyd will settle for a bench role with the Cubs.

Sign O' the times- past couple of years the Cubs have targeted Floyd to start, this year they are spending so much money he's an option for the bench!

Assuming JD Drew or a trade for some other name lefty-hitting OF isn't going to happen.....

The Cubs should think about dumping Jock (please!), trading for Craig Wilson, and putting him in a strict platoon with Floyd for RF. Those two in combination would put up some solid numbers, and give Lou Pa a nice PH option off the bench every single game. Count me in.

Alfonso Soriano is your RF.

Everything in the paper points to him playing CF.

Everything coming out of Bruce Miles and Lou Piniella says he's in right field.

Right-Field? Is Jones going to CF then?

Floyd for the bench= good.

Floyd as a starter= bad.

Agreed.

A guy in my office said Michael Kay had Lou on his radio show for a half hour Friday. He was talking about getting a young bench. Floyd doesn't seem to fit that bill. But, if he was a bench guy, I'd live with it.

He also said they have an offer out to Gary Mathews to play CF.

GMj scares me. His 2006 was worthy of a $10 million deal, but his career screams 4th outfielder. He's just so inconsistent. He's been abysmal in some years, but has had some good years as well, only in hitters parks.

From Mr. Miles' point of view, yes, unless he's dealt. My gut tells me that Hendry is exploring trades for Jacque with NL West and AL West teams - Jacque had indicated a month ago that if dealt he'd prefer a West Coast team. Maybe the Mariners, A's, Giants, Dodgers, Angels or his home-town Padres would be good fits.

I hope Hendry focuses on where he can get the best deal, and not where he can make the player most happy.

I agree but Mathews would just cost money while another CF may cost players. If the Cubs have the cash let them spend it and keep their players old and young and then trade the players to aquire the guy they want. IMO, it leaves the resources free and open. Yes, if cash is limited then you do the player trade.

I'd rather spend on FA than trade myself. But, Mathews is a guy capable of completely crapping the bed next year. I've heard he might get $10 million. To me, if Drew is getting $14 then you've got to take him over a $10m GMj.

If the list of possible CFers includes Roberst, Lugo and Matthews, GMJr goes to the very bottom of my list. If I could spend another 4 mill and get Drew, or trade for Manny and put Alfonso in Cf, by all means do it.

as Rotoworld says, "at least signing Floyd to play LF will guarantee a lot of playing time for Murton."

If people are scared by Drew's injury bug, they should be fleeing in horror at Floyd

I've got to believe that all of this Floyd talk is due to jIm's past interest in him. But even if he is currently interested in Floyd we probably won't get him. Chances are he'll be a starter somewhere. Could Dh for the twins or play left for the Padres that's two openings just off the top of my head.

Here's the latest from the Tribune in the Soriano article.

The Cubs are also in heated talks with New York Mets free-agent Cliff Floyd, a longtime Hendry favorite who could also platoon with Murton in left.

Every day of the week, and twice on Sundays, and four times on first Saturdays of the month. I think I'd prefer 100 games of Drew at 15 million than 162 for GMJ at 7 million.

Floyd makes an attractive option off the bench for protection against one out of the outfielders going down and he can play some first base as well as DH in interleague games. If we can sign him for the bench along with Phil Nevin I would be happy. Also from what I remember Floyd had a pretty good arm out there in the outfield.
