Guys, Boston has more than once tried to give Manny away for free. If you want to pay a cheap price in talent, tell Boston that you'll pick up the whole salary and I doubt you'll pay much.

I only know of the one time he was put on irrevocable waivers. Were there others?

Na, one time on irrevocable waivers. But I'm sure he's been passed through waivers every summer. And I don't think Boston would have pulled him back if anyone had claimed him.

And the rumors have been they've practically begged other teams to trade for him without luck.

I think the last time he was placed on waivers was when the RedSox had 70M less in payroll and Manny had 50M more left on his contract.

times have changed. Manny isn't being put on waivers with only two years left on his contract and the supposed river of money in baseball right now. taking on the entire salary isn't a big enough enticement today.

So if we miss out on Drew and Soriano (please god I hope not). Do you think chances improve Hendry would really go after Manny? (instead of getting average with upside guys like GMJr?)

Well if we lose out on Drew and he ends up in Boston, that could potentially make Manny more expendable. It really depends on what Theo is thinking.

I really want both Manny AND Drew, but I think that's beginning to look less and less likely.

Exerpt from Ken Rosenthal:

Cubs: Ramirez would be a perfect fit if the Cubs struck out on Soriano; general manager Jim Spendry — er, Hendry — could sign Julio Lugo or Gary Matthews Jr. to hit leadoff, and a lineup that featured Derrek Lee and both Manny and Aramis Ramirez would be obscene. The Cubs could part with shortstop Cesar Izturis and bullpen arms; and the Sox could reinvest their savings; the Cubs still would need starting pitching.

Much as I hate to say it, I completely agree with Rosenthal. I want Manny in LF in the worst way.

Send them Moore, Izturis, Eyre and Murton?

If the Cubs could substitute Jock for Murton, I'd absolutely love this deal.

Which tells me the Red Sox probably wouldn't go for it.

Actually, they might be stupid enough to do it. After all, they traded Murton away in the first place, and plus Jock is an established major leaguer.... :P

Plus, Jock can play CF!!!!! ;)

Manny going from a small left field at Fenway to a rather large one at Wrigley makes me cringe.

His defense can't be any worse than Alou's. Get a good CF and it would help hide a lot of his shortcomings.

Or Murton's.

I would have to think that the BoSox would prefer someone with a better upside than Hill in our minors as signing Mats (when they do) will pretty much complete their rotation. Hopefully we could do this without giving up Paw or Veal.

Better upside than Hill?!?!

The only players with more upside than Hill are Veal, Pawelek (maybe) and Huseby.

Veal hasn't had to deal with the more patient hitters at AA yet, Pawelek is unproven at best, and Huseby is really really far away from what he might become.

Hill easily has the best projection based on upside and readiness. They aren't a whole lot of "prospects" with much more stature than Hill right now. He's cheap and has #1 or #2 starter stuff... and major league ready. That's a pretty rare combo.

Not at Wrigley apparently.

If the Sox ink Drew I really do not think we will have to give up significant players in order to get Manny. Epstein value payroll flexability and just spent 50 mill for the privilege of speaking to the Japanese guy. This would be a classic salary dump.

I think because Manny only has two years left on his deal it won't be a straight dump, I wonder if the Cubs would be interested in getting back Matt Clement? With all the money the second tier guy are going to get maybe bringing back Matt might not be a bad idea if it lessen the players we would have to send to Boston. I had heard Rumors that Clement doesn't want to reutrn to the nationial league because running the bases was bad for his Asma?

an outfield of manny, murton, and soriano would be terrible defensively.

Screw defense,

A line-up of

Soriano CF

DeRosa 2b

Lee 1b

Ramirez 3b

Ramirez RF

Murton LF

Barrett C

Izturis SS

makes me need new pants.

I think I read it on baseballmusings, but the Cubs had the best outfield defense last year. Crazy.

Oh I agree that offense would be disgusting. But we'd be covering our eyes every half-inning. In actuality it would be really interesting to watch.

As far as our defense being the best maybe thats only in terms of errors. I know that pierre had zero, murton had 3, and jones had seven. That of course didn't count jones' worm burners, pierres weak arm and murtons occaisonal misreads.
