at least one of Eyre/Howry have a NTC

I think eyre would wave that without hesitation, as Baker is gone who he had a great relationship with, along with getting off a team that was the worst in the NL to go a decent AL team.

When I look at rumors like this, I ask myself, does this pass the "is that something Jim Hendry would do" (ITSJHWD) test?

For example a week ago, when I first heard the Cubs were eyeing Mark DeRosa, I asked myself, is that something Jim Hendry would do? The answer was pretty obvious...of course! Sure enough...

Likewise, when I hear the Cubs are interested in Gil Meche, well, ITSJHWD? You betcha.

Signing a good hitting SS and moving him to CF to accomodate your light-hitting SS that you bought for $5.95 off the dollar rack the year before?

Yep, I can see it.

But outbidding other teams for one of the top free agents on the market?

ITSJHWD?

I think you already know the answer.

The Cubs would have to pick up a chunk of the salary of Eyre/Howry. The Indians can't afford relievers that cost that much - that's the reason Howry left them last offseason.

What continues to bug or scare me about this go all out and get him attitude from Hendry is that he's going to overspend this time and will live to regret it.

The articles keep bringing up Beltran when they talk about the total yrs. and dollars it's going to take to get Soriano. The difference, in terms of years primarily, between the two is that Beltran was 27/28yrs. old when he was signed to a 7yr. contract vs. Soriano about to turn 31. He's going to be way outside of his prime a few yrs. from now and will not have all of his 5 tools that Hendry and Piniella are in love with. Sadly, knowing the Cubs luck he'll end up with one main tool left by the time he's 34 --his propensity for striking out. Now, I do have high hopes that either the Cubs win a world series within the next few years with the help of Soriano or Soriano turns into Barry Bonds and reinvents himself, but as you can tell I'm skeptical.

My friend said they were talking about a Jones and Wuertz for Westbrook trade. Did they say this?

Kaplan said the other night, Hendry loves Murton, but that he almost guaranteed that Jones would not be with the team to start next year.

Schnikes that's good news if true!

thats fantastic news. Id try to change Wuertz to Eyre/Howry though, but thats still great. Westbrook would be a great #3/#4 option for the rotation, and would be a steady, solid arm for us for a good 2-3 years. I can't wait to see the type of improvement hed make going from the AL to the NL. He has pitched 200+ innings for 3 straight years, and doesnt walk to many batters. Those things are two attributes we need out of at least one of our starters next year.

I believe he's talking about Jones being gone being "good news if true."

I guess I wouldn't mind Westbrook, though.

Speaking of Hendry's man-love for Soriano, I wonder who might have dropped this little gem from Jerry Crasnick's latest:

"Even if he doesn't hit a homer, he can find a way to get in scoring position," a Soriano booster said. "He can score from first on a double. Carlos Lee is a great hitter, but he's a liability defensively and he clogs up the bases."

I really am not a fan of Soriano at the asking price (dollars + years). Hendry has a bulldog mentality when it comes to these things. He was willing to trade Sosa for Alph a few years ago. Hendry usually gets him man, (Furcal, thank Len, withstanding). Unfortuneatley, his men have been mediocre or middle relievers that are about as reliable as an Iraqi Police officer.

If they do get Alph, I'd like to see him moved back to 2nd base, but again Hendry is all about defense up the middle. So that will likely not happen.

I just don't know. I don't like Soranio for CF and I like having Murton in LF. However, the Cubs need run producers. If they trade Murton, I hope they get something of good value in return. I could see Murton having a Paul O'Neil type career. I suppose they could trade JJ and move Soranio to RF (bring on the Sammy comparisons that aren't valid, Chicago media)

IMO, three things that make me think Hendry will get Soriano

1. Hendry believes "lead-off" is a position in the field

2. Hendry has been infatuated with Soraino (like he was for Barrett)

3. Hendry usually gets his man

Not even to mention the fact that he is coming off a year that is out of context with the rest of his career. It just amazes me how many times do teams have to be burned with bad free agent contracts before they study what types of players tend to be bad free agent signings. I can almost guarantee that the number one bad idea is signing a past 30 player who is coming off a career year to a more than 3 year contract. "Oh but he is athletic and toolsy." I just want to know are the fans who want to pay "whatever it takes" to get Soriano willing to accept the fact that we will not be able to obtain other players in 3 years because we are stuck with his contract while he is putting up Jacque Jones numbers.

I love the trade of Jones and Wuertz for Westbrook that would be great deal by Hendry. We have plenty of arms in the pen that could fill Wuertz's slot like Marmol,Mateo,Guzman,Nova,Ardasma ect. The salaries would also be a wash and open up two outfield spots for Soranio and Drew to join Murton.

If the Cubs get Alph you can forget Drew.

At first I thought you were talking about El Pulpo, which really confused me.

Then I realized you meant Soriano, and it made more sense. That wasn't Hendry that was going to trade Sosa. It was MacPhail.

I think we should aviod referring to Soriano as "Alph" at all costs. Too much pain associated with that nickname.

If the cubs bench or trade Murton, I'll completely disown them.

Murton is absolutely perfect for this team.

No, Murton has patience, gets big hits, and gets on base. He is definitely not made for the Cubs. Players like Izturis and Pierre are perfect for this team, based on their mantra the past few seasons.

Yeah, its really annoying, especially considering he spells his name "Alfonso," not "Alphonso."

"ph" doesn't make an "f" sound in the Spanish language.

While you're right, 'Alf' would be no less annoying.

I echo Mr. Wood's sentiment.

Can someone please explain to me what is so special about Lugo? I'm sorry, Lugo's production would sucik for a CF (I think he's very overrated as a middle infielder), and I don't want to see Jones or Murton moved to accomodate him.

I know he's board persona non-grata, for whatever that's worth, but getting a .820 OPS/20+ HR corner outfielder to replace Jones for $4.5 million or less in this offseason market is not going to be as easy as some think

Don't cheat. And you are not allowed to abstain. You must choose one to be on your team. Which one do you want? And yes, the middle column is OBP and the far right column is SLG. :D

Lugo gets on base more than Jacque Jones. But, I don't want him to play CF, either.
