Well, he's versatile at least. Can't ever have enough versatility.

We were already versatile with Cedeno, Izzy, and Theriot.

Well, now they can lead the league in versatility. That should be good for 10 extra wins or so.

Appearances in 2006:

RF 60

3B 40

2B 26

SS 7

LF 5

DH 3

1B 1

More of Hendry overypaying for mediocrity. So much for Baker and MacPhail being responsible for Hendry's crappy acquisitions.

only if DeRosa's ScrQ+ (Scrappiness Quotient Plus) is 517.4 or higher

Even though he was with Texas his home/away splits are basically the same with the SLG a bit higher on the road. He is on the wrong side of 30 though. We'll see, it depends on how much the deal is for.

Can he play RF against a tough lefty to spell Jaqcue and to give Theriot some PT at 2B? Can he play SS if Izturis gets hurt? He does seem like the classic move around the diamond guy.

I like the signing - but it sounds like Hendry paid too much too soon. If I recall we said that about Howry and Eyre last year. I think Howry was worth it; Eyre disappointed especially in second half.

I'm hoping it's a platoon partner for Jones - his splits against lefties last year 342/394/589 ops=983. That gives stellar right field production for less than $10 mill

you know, i don't believe it but, it would be interesting to have derosa as a platoon guy with jones in right. he did bat .342 against leftys last year.

Now, that's an idea I would like. If Derosa played second against right handers with Jacque in right, then Derosa could play right against left handers with Theriot at second-that would give better production out of the two positions.

that's an awfully lot of money. I wish it was Durham, but let's hope DeRosa is at least his numbers from last year.

If this situation ends up with Izzy gone and TheRiot at short then I think it's a good move. If the middle infield is Izzy and DeRosa then I pissed, that would require a HUGE boost in production from the OF and I don't see that coming thus far.

That would be awsome right there..both good with OBP...Get rid of Izzy..

maybe it's a prelude to sending izzy to cleveland with prospects for westbrook.

Or maybe send Cedeno in the deal for Westbrook they need a 2B. Send them Novoa, Cedeno, and some minor leaguers.

With many more signings like this, we'll hit the $115 million mark pretty soon without seeing much improvement in the team.

I hope this means the insurance company is paying Glendon Rusch's $3.25M salary in 2007.

The Indians just got Barfield from the Padres in a deal last week. They don't need a second baseman.

I don't understand the gripe. 4 million a year is the market for a veteran 2nd baseman with average numbers.

He's a below average hitter and has never been an everyday 2B. And he'll be 32, 33, and 34 during his 3 year deal.

DeRosa had th 5th best OPS among all qualified 2B in baseball last year. Even with regress from 2006, he's not below average.

Not many people would recommend only listing a player's career year when thinking about what he'll do in the future. That's not smart. It's darn right foolish in fact. 98 OPS+ in 2005, 59 in 2004, 84 in 2003. That's a wide range, with some atrociousness and mediocrity.

He's also not an everyday guy, never has been.

You can call it a career year if you like, but it also represents the first year he played everyday. Others can make the argument that partial year stats for the career are less valuable than a full season of everyday play.

People choose to use career numbers when it suits their position (ala Giles discussions) while ignoring 2006, so it goes both ways.

For what's it worth, in an all-star or bust at every position only mentality around here, here is the 2006 comparison:

Cubs 2006 2B: .274/.326/.411/.737

DeRosa 2006: .296/.357/.456/.813

Even with regression to appease the career stats crowd, it looks like an upgrade to me.

It's wishful thinking. I don't know why Cleveland should want any part of Izturis.

A platoon of Jacque Jones and DeRosa in right field would be very productive, but the Cubs are probably going to give DeRosa a chance to be their primary second baseman. DeRosa turns 32 in February and is a career .260/.316/.366 hitter against righties (to put that in perspective, Neifi Perez is a career .268/.298/.376 hitter). Versus lefties, he has an impressive .306/.367/.497 line.

wow. he's really that close to neifi against righties.

this is not looking so hot. unless he is out to platoon with jones.
