who do you want and why?

EDIT: Daisuke's numbers, obviously, were accumulated in Japan. Sorry, forgot to put the asterisk.

Zito.

Batter's have a .232 career average off of him, 1.25 career WHIP, and a career .618 winning %. Not ot mention he is still pretty young and he throws the ball from the left side.

I'd prefer Schmidt slightly over Zito and either heavily over Matsuzaka. Each has shown that they have great stuff, but we already have a soft-tossing lefty with a great curve in Hill.

I don't want Matsuzaka because I am very hesitant to spend a lot of money on a player completely unproven in the major leagues. He has pretty good stuff, but how many times have we seen a pitcher from Japan or Korea come to the MLB, dominate at first, and then get figured out, ending in mediocrity? Enough for me. I think our money can be better spent.

On initial glance, I'd rank them Matsuzaka, Schmidt, then Zito.

It comes down to a close call between Matsuzaka and Schmidt. Matsuzaka is younger, but has been abused as far as IP goes. Also, signing Matsuzaka will not cost us draft picks.

On the other hand, it is still questionable as to what Matsuzaka will do. Schmidt is a more proven commodity.

Between the two, it's probably decided with a coin flip. I take either over Zito and the contract he'll command.

Interesting note from Peter Gammons. He said Barry Zito hasn't missed a start since high school.

Schmidt's up and down velocity should scare you. Huge hint at a possible shoulder injury. Plus, he has been over worked by Alou the past couple of years.

I was in the Mats or bust camp.

Given the (likely performance) * (risk) / (likely price) ratio for Zito and Schmidt, I'll say pass and move on to the next tier. I'd keep my eye on the market and if the price for those guys drops, then I'd move in.
