Et tu, Drew?

A free-agent market thin on five-tool players could grow stronger if Dodgers outfielder J.D. Drew opts out of his contract. Drew, who turns 31 on Nov. 20, must decide by Friday whether to void the final three years and $33 million on his current deal.

While Drew seems content with the Dodgers, his agent, Scott Boras, generally prefers his clients to determine their values on the open market. Drew compares favorably to the top free-agent hitters; he's a more proven defender than Alfonso Soriano, a more established hitter than Gary Matthews Jr. and a better all-around player than Carlos Lee.

Drew's durability is a diminishing concern — he has played 145 or more games in two of the past three seasons, and missed significant time in '05 only because he suffered a broken wrist when he was hit by a pitch. He also can play center field as well as right, further increasing his marketability.

The flip side is that many in the game still question Drew's passion, perhaps making it doubtful that he would receive a better deal as a free agent. Drew is not coming off as strong a season as third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who opted out of his deal with the Cubs and is expected to land a whopping free-agent contract.

Boras, though, would need only one team to catch Drew fever, and the Red Sox, Angels, Cubs, Astros, Giants, Padres Orioles all would represent possible fits.

Would make a much nicer addition than Carlos Lee.

Well I don't know if I want him on the Cubs, what with his injury history and the Cubs success with keeping players on the DL.

But if he opts out, hopefully it'll bring down the prices of the other outfielders.

Referring to another player mentioned in Rosenthal's article, I wouldn't mind trading for Jason Jennings if the price wasn't too steep.

JD Drew would be the best addition for this ballclub, since he can also play CF. If he opts out 4/52 seems about right for him.

With the Rockies' need for a center fielder, Jennings' salary and his performance last year, I would think any package would at least start with Pie and another prospect.

Drew would be perfect for RF.

how's drews CF defense? its easier to get a RF bat.

It's also harder to get Drew and a RF bat than just getting Drew.

It's hard to tell how his defense is in CF, he's got just over a season's worth of time there and half of it was back in his STL days. For his career he seems to be average, although the last two years he got more than a couple games he was below average(all of this based on BP's Rate, a far from infallible source).

As stated, I have to oppose him, but even if he is a below-average CF, who cares? He puts up a .400 OBP and a 133 OPS+ at a position where most guys are average- to below-average hitters. The offense you gain at that position far outweighs the hit you'll take on defense.

Murton in LF, Drew in CF, Kearns in RF.

How about Murton in LF, Drew in RF, and Jones in CF. I just don't think Hendry will trade Jones unless he demands a trade or is wowed by an offer.

I think Drew would be better in CF than Jones.

I have feeling that Sheffield will be in right field next season and Hendry will try to spin Jones somewhere. The Yankees are trying to keep him away from the AL and with almost 5 million of his deal defffered if the Cubs can get him without giving up a ton of talent he would provide a huge upgrade over Jones at not much more in payroll. I hope Hendry would then go after Drew for Center field and leave Murton in Left field. With that outfield I would hope Hendry can find a good defensive fourth outfielder who can start some to fill in for the games Sheffield and Drew will need off. Durham Second leading off?

Durham

Murton

Lee

Drew

Ramirez

Sheffield

Barrett

Izturiz/Theriot/Cedeno

Doesn't look to bad althought injuries are a concern with that group.

While I'm sure by Hendry's standards Jones was nowhere near a disappointment due to production of standard stats, hopefully this will also increase Jone's value in the marketplace. Kearns is a good example because hes a rare player that has qualities that we all like and Hendry has been after previously. Also, Bowden is an idiot and although he just traded for Kearns, he horribly flopped in his first month in Washington and has very openly discussed his displeasure playing for the Nats. I have been all about going after Kearns, Church, and Vidro. Church definitely wouldn't stop me from going after Drew though.
