And I'm still waiting for the headline that reads:

"Aramis hustles to first base on a routine grounder, which in turn moves the Cubs out of the cellar and into first place".

Would hustle even be discussed if Hendry put a quality roster together that was competing for first place this year? Maybe it's wrong for a guy to not hustle as much on a last place team going nowhere. But, I can see where the desire to hustle wouldn't be as intense if it means the difference in finishing 29 games out of first or 30.

Remember how Aramis got hurt in 2005?

It was hustling down the line to break up a double play. In the first inning.

He got ripped for being injury prone.

Discussed? Yes. Excused? Absolutely. When teams start to lose though, minor issues inevitably get blown way out of proportion-on the Cubs right now, this one is it.

When people tell me the Cubs shouldnt resign Aram because he doesnt hustle, I just ask how many runs has he cost the Cubs by not hustling? Invariably someone will say "a bunch" or "quite a bit." I will then ask them to prove it? There response is something like "its common sense"or the one I really like "I cant but I know its a lot" Than I ask them something like where did the Cubs rank in runners left on base, which they say something like "a bunch" or "Quite a bit". So I drop the info on them that they had the least runners left on base in the NL and point out that their answer to both questions was the same and they were wrong on the second one. I than offer to show how many runs not having ARam in the order will cost the Cubs and they will say something like "yeah but he didnt hit when we needed him" This one actually bothers me more than the hustle one. Trying to explain that even if he hit well in May and June the Cubs would only have won a couple of more games in that stretch and blah blah blah. Somehow even with mathematical proof they still fall back on their preceptions and misinformation that they blinding follow even when facts are put right in front of them. I came to the conclusion that you just cant get enough Juan Pierres for some people no matter how many ways you show he sucks and ARam doesnt.

True, but why would Hendry say its his #1 priority if he didnt want to resign him? That would do nothing but cause more people to lose faith in him. It could just be so he can say "look, I tried", but I think the negative of saying he's his #1 priority far outweighs the positive. I'm not saying a deal will definitely get done, but I'm convinced that Hendry really is trying to make it happen.

Can you remind me where the #1 priority talk is coming from? I don't remember it, other than talking about the manager. Was it said once? Or is it being restated over and over?

Come to think of it, I dont remember specifically. Its just one of those things that it seems like I've heard and I thought I was sure when I posted that. You might be right, I dont really want to try and find a quote. But I will say that I have a strong feeling that Hendry truly wants to sign Ramirez.

The latest SCORE update said a deal could be finalized in the next 4-5 days.

Is WGN saying the same thing? ESPN?

If not, saying something could happen 4-5 days from now is really saying nothing. And the Score is already famous for breaking stories that go nowhere.

Someone needs to cut and paste that article and email it to Greg Couch.

Also, somebody gamelogged all of Aramis' HR"s this season in a game thread, and like 2/3 of them gave the Cubs the lead, tied the game, or brought the Cubs within one. But yeah, totally all meaningless.

mlbtraderumors may be right for once

Um, seriously? That degrading comment regarding mlbtraderumors might have been appropriate a year ago when it had no credibility, but over the course of the year Tim Dierks' (who writes for the much loved rotoworld) credibility has grown leaps and bounds. He has learned when to post and when not to post rumors and to appropriately divulge the credibility of the source and work to find corroboration. Remember in those first two weeks when he said Cameron and Nady would be swapped and multiple cubs pitching prospects (naming Pinto and Nolasco) would be traded for Pierre? Everyone thought he was a raving loony.

Glad to hear that, maybe this is true. Hopefully they've nailed down the biggest roadblock, the number of years, and can just concentrate on the numbers for each year.

:D

11,13,15,15,13, with a vesting player option of a sixth year for 13, making the agent able to promote it as a 6/80 contract. Perfect.

I e-mailed Couch the link and here's his reply.

Thanks for writing. A few other people have already sent that to me. I'll tell you the same thing I told them:

I'm guessing I'll survive.

My dad told me he heard we were close to resigning Aram on the radio. He only listens to WGN so I'm assuming that is where he heard it.

I guess he's oblivious to the fact that his article was utter crap.

Maybe someone should email him the game logs that show most of ARam's homeruns were far from meaningless.

What's his email, BTW?

We've actually been exchanging e-mails back and forth about Ramirez and the Cubs in generally. I have to say his e-mails are much better than the original article.

Does he have any better basis for his stance that he wrote?

I'm starting to wonder if the Score update from yesterday was BS. I believe all they are doing is taking Miles article on Ramirez from yesterday and re-stating his proposed figures as fact.

Invite him to discuss the matter in this thread...he may not be terribly flattered with some of the comments here, but I think we can keep the discussion at a reasonable level...

I don't think it's so far fetched?
