I think the difference between this and Sosa is that none of it is coming from the Cubs. Its all coming from writers with learning disabilities that heard from ESPN that players like Eckstein are what wins championships. All we're hearing from the Cubs is that Ramirez is their #1 priority. They wouldnt say that if they were planning on not signing him because that would make it seem like their offseason isnt going well.

No, I think it's just that most writers are dumb enough to equate the Cubs' failure with lack of hustle. They've been criticizing Ramirez since the beginning of last season. I guess apparent lack of hustle=laziness=indifference=inability to produce early in the season. Yet, Pierre never gets criticized despite the fact that, while Ramirez was apparently singlehandedly ruining our season, he was probably the worst hitter, OPS-wise, in the majors and wasn't doing his one simple task: getting on base in front of Ramirez.

It might not be the Cubs themselves, but it's still in the trib:

All John Rooney does is call World Series winners-last year for the Sox, this year for the Cardinals, ’87 for the Twins. Tell you what, if I’m the Cubs, I go after Rooney and offer to trade Aramis Ramirez and a color commentator to be named later. If nothing else, I know that Rooney will give me something in April and May.

I heard that Ramirez filed for free agency. What’s the market for guys who only hit when it doesn’t matter?

If Lou Piniella wants Ramirez, I’m not sure I want Piniella.

I mean...wow...I just can't get over this. Unbelievable. I really don't know what else to say. Mind-boggling

Update on WSCR just mentioned that sources indicate that the Cubs are getting closer to re-signing Aramis.

No link or anything, just thought I'd post it here.

Maybe they plan on resigning him, and then promoting it as a big offseason move. Get fans to start think of Ramirez as gone, then, when he signs, it's like signing a free agent.

Remove the tin foil hat. The black helocopters aren't coming for you...yet.

So it's a conspiracy theory to think the Cubs might botch the offseason and promote resigning their own guys as big moves?

I don't think that's paranoia, it's realism from a Cubs fan.

Aramis might just want the Cubs to put an offer on the table to establish a baseline for the bidding war to come. If I were Aram that's how I'd play it.

Far from conspiracy theory, it's a defined business process for them.

There's a big difference between being incompetent and covering up your mistakes with mediaspeak and purposefully misleading your fanbase.

i think its obvious they will spin this as a huge offseason move, they've got to keep from losing more fans to the south side. thats fine with me, as long as they actually make some other huge moves.

True, but why would Hendry say its his #1 priority if he didnt want to resign him? That would do nothing but cause more people to lose faith in him. It could just be so he can say "look, I tried", but I think the negative of saying he's his #1 priority far outweighs the positive. I'm not saying a deal will definitely get done, but I'm convinced that Hendry really is trying to make it happen.

Can you remind me where the #1 priority talk is coming from? I don't remember it, other than talking about the manager. Was it said once? Or is it being restated over and over?

Ignorant fan on the Score:

"I'd sign anybody to a $15 million contract other than Ramirez."

This lazy thing is taking on a life of its own. People are really stupid.

I don't know if I'd call them stupid. Aramis's lack of hustle is a character issue, and that makes it annoying, but annoyance is an emotional reaction and business decisions shouldn't be made on the basis of emotion. A lot of fans react with their gut and don't think this stuff through.

I try never to listen to the Score between 12 and 2. It's like open mic night at the idiots club.

I also get a kick out of people that clamor for Soriano but think Aramis is lazy.

It is an overblown myth.

QFT. It's a product of radio beat reporters with a grudge, repeating a mantra over and over until it becomes publically accepted.
