Offer him an incentive laden deal and put him in the bullpen.

Otherwise, as much as it pains me (as I'm sure it does most Cub fans), let him go.

We have too much money invested in the bullpen anyways.

Let him go and watch him win numerous Cy Youngs

I suggest we play the role of obsessive ex-girlfriend on this one. I don't want him, but no one else can have him either.

We all know his shoulder is going to magically heal and he'll find his control and start winning 20 games a year if he goes to another team.

Yeah and my ex-girlfriends used to give the lines, "It's not you, it's me."

You too, huh?

George Costanza came up with "it's not you, it's me".

GC: 'Don't you dare tell me it's you and not me. If it's anyone it's me!'

(girl breaking up with George): 'All right, George, you're right. It's you.'

GC: 'You're damn right it's me!'

Wood may like it here, but he's no dummy. Making himself technically a free agent is basically him ensuring he gets as much money from the Cubs as possible if they want to keep him. I think he can still be had for relatively cheap, but if it's for more than $3-4 million dollars a year plus incentives, no thanks. I wouldn't want more than 2 years, with 1 being the ideal option.

Could the Cubs offer Wood arb or does he get too much of a paycut to be eligable?

i think they can always offer arbitration. it's just that he can't make less than 80% of what he made last year - and that's way more than the cubs should be willing to pay.

i want to see him back, but at ~$11m, no thanks.

He'll be back.

Agreed, the new collective bargaining agreement changes some of the rules about free agency, so I think it's in his best interest to file, but it doesn't mean he wants to leave the cubs.

You're right, Wood is no dummy. He KNOWS he isn't going to get a BIG deal, and most likely will only get a incentive laden contract. So if you are going to settle for that kind of contract, why not stick to the ONLY organization. KW loves the city, loves the org (I don't know why, but he does), so like ARam, KW will be back in Chicago.

If Kerry Wood can't be a starting pitcher, I see no reason to waste the money on him (again) and see if he can switch in midstream, become an effective reliever, and stay healthy. Screw the emotion of it. Let him see if his career has any life left in it on someone else's dime, like the Rangers or Yankees.

I just don't see how, even with an "incentive laden" contract in the $3MM range, this could possibly work out well. Wood is damaged goods, he's done. You don't not pitch for basically three full seasons and suddenly get healthy. It's over. Tragic, but it's over. I love Woody, but the Cubs have hung out hope and many Ben Franklins for too long now. Let's move on.

That's what I thought, thanks.

He may "love" it here, but the man no doubt also "loves" getting the extra million or two that making himself a free agent will probably net him from the Cubs. I'm not holding this against him...it's just what ballplayers do. Maximize your payday.
