Shouldn't Ritz Crackers be sponsoring this award?

nah, Saltines. They are whiter, blander and they come free with a bowl of soup.

fjm has a nice reaming of this promotion up on its site.

awesome. who's the other non-white player that they refer to? Is it Victorino, or am I missing one?

Ethier.

What race is he then? I'm curious.

I'm pretty sure I heard that his father was French and his mother Mexican from Vin Scully.

clearly it should be the "wonder" white bread award.

seriously what type of serious award has to have a cadidate from every team?

if anyone watched the cubs play they have very few players that deserve any type of award for last season....and there has got to be a better candidate than mabry...heck, murton's very white...kinda clear even!

I can't wait till David Eckstein doesn't play the game anymore. I'm sick of hearing about him.

I can't wait until David Eckstein received another ring this year while the Cubs sit at home in complete disarray

great, so out of the choices there are 28.5 white and 1.5 hispanic? well, I guess we still have some work to do in this country.

Why is it so difficult for everyone here to discover that the REALLY good players are absent from this list. The black, latino, dominican, and other minority players are the ones in the running for the MVP honors--an award that none of these guys have a chance to win.

It's been discovered. The media and marketing folks are hoping to get white people all excited about voting for their favorite scrappy white dude, because they have a preconceived notion about what a hard working, self sacrificing, team player looks like.

For one, yes, it is open to criticism because of the fact that nearly every single player on this freaking list is white. You can find plenty of non-white players of comparable talent and production to all of the guys on this list on pretty much every team. Tell me, what makes David Eckstein any more deserving of an award like this than, say, Yadier Molina? Or John Mabry as compared to Henry Blanco?

Secondly, this list seems completely arbitrary. The list ranges from halfway decent players (Westbrook) to 25th men at best (John Mabry). What exactly qualifies a guy for a list like this? Is it because John Mabry once told a joke that made Aramis Ramirez feel better after Rammy got a parking ticket downtown? Is it because Kevin Youkilis once took a 45 minute detour to get the Red Sox 10 dozen donuts with sprinkles from Dunkin Donuts before practice one day?

Finally, while Cardinals fans are welcome here, you may want to tread lightly. Comments such as your first post in this thread usually are bad omens for posters such as yourself.

It also includes Nick Johnson who had a better year at the plate than anyone on the Cobs. The most consistent thread seems to be race.

if, after looking at those stats, you can't tell that he's really good at baseball, then you dont understand baseball.

It really is hilarious. There's no real logical connector between any of these players besides mostly being white. How in the world are John Mabry (.205/.283/.324), Garrett Atkins (.329/.409/.556) and Nick Johnson (290/428/520) on the same list for anything? What do they possibly have in common? Hell, how is Mabry on a list for an award? When I look again, I am struck by the magnitude of Mabry's sucking. Does that deserve an award? Murton was pretty under-the-radar, actually productive, and is every bit as white, if not whiter (hey, he's a redhead). Who came up with this crap?

i hope everyone knows that if the cardinals win the world series, hendry's going after every guy on this list. but probably only the ones that suck.

Why not someone like Orlando Hudson from Arizona? He had a good year, and is just as much of a "role player" as Eric Byrnes is. How about Coco Crisp in Boston, Alex Cintron from the White Sox, Edwin Encarnacion or Brandon Phillips from the Reds. Solid leadoff hitters like Brian Roberts and Ryan Freel made the list; why not put on Curtis Granderson from the Tigers?

As someone noted, people have their preconceived notion of what constitutes a role player. It's a gritty, scrappy guy who works hard to get where he is. It's unfair, but many people seem to assume that minority players inherently have all the talent in the world and don't need to work hard to achieve big things athletically.
