I can't wait till David Eckstein doesn't play the game anymore. I'm sick of hearing about him.

I kind of get a kick out of watching him throw over to first though :D

I can't wait until Theroit becomes the next Eckstein and they talk about him instead. .

I'm going to liken this to Kornheiser's enthusiastic response to Mike Tyson's claim that he would fight women. TK said it's a great thing because it takes you one step closer to 'Tyson will fight a bear.'

I'm crossing my fingers that mlb just sells out even more and brings ideas such as a "Depends Undergarments Performing Under Pressure Player of the Year" award, etc. that much closer to reality. What's next? Putting the backs of chairs in a baseball team's dugout? ... wait.

edit: I know this is irrelevant to the "wonderbread" aspect you originally put up, but the award itself is stupid. What player honestly wants to accept this stuff? Put it on the fireplace mantle or in the fireplace itself?

Not irrelevant at all - I think the award is a joke, and a bad one at that.

Seriously, this is brutal. Jose Valentin is Puerto Rican, isn't that the only non-white player on the list? Shane Victorino is Hawai'ian, which isn't exactly white, but really, there's not much difference. Most of these guys aren't even role players. Woody Williams and Jake Westbrook are regular starters. Atkins started nearly every game, scored and drove in well over 100 runs. Then there are the choices like Mabry and Shouse, who were mediocre.

I remember reading somewhere, either in a magazine or book, that almost it's almost always white guys who get the reputation of being average-talent guys that make it based on their hard work. I believe the point was also made that when teams are looking for guys to fill out their roster, they keep aging white players over minority players.

This award is pretty dumb in general, but the fact that 29 of the 30 players are white is really telling. Way to go Major League Baseball and Holiday Inn.

What the hell is with the title? Look again? At what, how bad some of these guys are (calling Mabry mediocre is an insult to mediocrity). The fact that some are everyday players and some barely see the field?

Yeah, as FJM says:

I'm sort of torn over who to vote for here. It's such an odd mix of guys who had legitimately great seasons (Crede, DeRosa, McCann), startlingly mediocre starters (Jakes Woods and Westbrook), and absolutely irrelevant middle relievers (Brian Shouse???). A large part of me wants to throw the thing for the absolute worst player on the list. Is it Shouse, with his 34.0 innings of 1.50 WHIP ball? How about Grabow, with 69.2 IP and a 1.43 WHIP? No, wait. Of course it's John Mabry: dude posted a .205/.283/.324 (EqA of .214)! He scored 16 runs in 107 games. Wow. John Mabry.

The award makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. It's like they took out all the superstars, all the minorities, and then just picked names out of a hat.

So Goony I guess you won't be joining my campaign to stuff the ballot for Mabry

I'm adamently opposed to taking part in the election, but I think it would be great if Mabry got more votes than somebody like Crede.

How you can put Joe Crede, Nick Johnson, Brian McCann and Garrett Atkins in a group with John Mabry, Brian Shouse, John Grabow, Jake Woods, and these other guys is just weird.

If Eckstein put up an .800 OPS would he still be scrappy?

Is there an equivalent to the Mendoza Line for grittiness? I think it should be OPS< .700 = scrappy, gritty, gamer or whatever the cliche dujour is for Ecksteinian play.

fjm has a nice reaming of this promotion up on its site.

awesome. who's the other non-white player that they refer to? Is it Victorino, or am I missing one?

Ethier.

What race is he then? I'm curious.

It truly is amazing how the media has created this national love affair with a player who, plainly put, is no [expletive] good. Why? Cuz he's short? I mean, I guess short NBA players get some special attention, but not if they're averaging 2 points and an assist a game.
