CHICAGO -- Lou Piniella, who will be formally introduced as the new Chicago Cubs manager Tuesday afternoon, wants to acquire embattled -- and possibly available -- New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

Sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.com that Piniella, who is extremely close to Rodriguez, expects the Cubs to aggressively pursue the 10-time All-Star. The 63-year-old manager and the 31-year-old Rodriguez have what amounts to a quasi-father/son relationship. It is that relationship -- and the tantalizing talent of Rodriguez -- that has prompted Piniella to want to explore a trade with the Yankees.

I don't think A-rod is worth Ramirez and a quality pitcher. He is good but A-ram had similar numbers and he is younger. Giving up an arm as well makes it even less attractive. Subtracting a big bat and a pitcher for another big bat is not a real big upgrade.

I don't much care about his postseason failures in New York. Right now, I would trade literally anyone on the Cubs roster to acquire Alex Rodriguez. It would be amazing if we could re-sign and keep A-Ram. The outfield is still a question mark, but an infield of DLee, ??? at 2B, A-Rod at SS and A-Ram at 3B would be amazing, no question.

Any concerns about his range/quickness at short?

A little bit. But I'd take ARod driving in runs with his bat over Cesar driving them in with his glove. :)

Trade anyone on the team for A-Rod besides Ramirez, Lee, Z and Prior. Anyone else is on the block.

Why Prior?

I'd avoid trading him because he's only had one year where he's really injury prone. Of course, you're toying with wasting his value if he's bad again this year, but i'd rather that we suck the remaining life out of his arm over the Yankees.

Would NY agree to any trade that doesn't involve Aramis? Any other decent FA 3rd baseman they could go for this year?

I agree. I would have to think long and hard about ARam for ARod especially if you added a pitcher into the deal.

If prior or no prior is a dealbreaker, than I trade them Prior. I would like to keep him, but a Prior, Eyre, Pie package to me looks like the only one that would get it done without trading away a keeper unless the Yankees really love Hill.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Hill/Eyre/Pie deal does it if the Yankees manage to get Daisuke. Hill is suddenly a MUCH cheaper version of Zito and they can spare the offense.

Aubrey Huff is, and he seems like the type of player the yankees would overpay for. I think if the Yankees got back enough good pitching they'd pull the trigger on an A-Rod deal. The offense would not miss a beat IMO with the absense of A-Rod. It really isnt fair actually that they should have that kind of lineup.

If it takes ARam for Arod, it is not worth it. Over the next five years their numbers will likely be a wash, and ARod is more expensive.

A three way deal could make this happen, imo.

Cubs get: Arod

Marlins get : Pie, Marshall, Guzman

Yankees get: Willis, Eyre

Or a mega-blockbuster:

Yankees get: Willis, Eyre, Prior, Dempster

Marlins get: Hughes, Hill, Murton, Pie

Cubs get: ARod, Cabrera, Pavano

Would they take a nice looking 3rd-base prospect?

When did we get one?

Shhh, maybe they're reading. What about Moore?

"Uhhhh, yeah, he's the best! A prince among men!"

Don't forget A-rod said today that he would feel like he was walking away from a challenge if he allowed a trade to anther team. I think A-rod has a chip on his shoulder and wants to win over the Yankee fans.
