Political correctness run amuck.

you can't be serious - or else you didn't read that he followed that up with "I can't understand but I don't want to sit too close to you."

One of the most obnoxiously racist comments ever said on the air. Absolutely shocking and offensive. To categorize that level of ignorance as political correctness is misguided and ignorant.

Oh please. You have got to be kidding. Harmless....not very funny....and dumb. But not by and stretch of the imagination "One of the most obnoxiously racist comments ever said on the air."

What Piniella said about the wallet ( or billeto....if you will)...made no sense...and Lyons tried (and failed) to be clever and funny.

You want offensive? Watch Fox News. Now THATS offensive.

the thing about the wallet was one of the few things that made sense in the fact that it actually sort of correllated to what he was talking about. I can't remember the point he was trying to make (something about not being able to count on something? I dunno.) but it did make sense at the time...sort of.

I don't know.

Steve Lyons is an idiot though. Good riddance.

What Lou said made sense, it was a kind of a Dustyism/old man saying though.

They were talking about Marco Scutaro and how he had 6RBI in the ALDS but 0 now and how that was hurting the A's (they put his hits and RBIs up with Frank Thomas and Swisher) Lou said that it was unfair to put Marco up there with those two because they were run producers and Scutaro was a slick fielding 8 hitter the other guys bring up the 6RBI and then he said that was like finding a wallet on Friday and expecting to find one on Saturday and Sunday. In other words, the 6RBIs were nice but shouldn't be expected.

i dont understand it... i was listening to the game when he said the wallet thing.. when i heard it i didnt care much.. well i thought it was a joke... thats why i didnt understand the firing.

anyways maybe it was because of something he said/or did before?

does anyone know why Brenly is not in the booth in this years playoffs?

I've been wondering this as well.

I'm sure that after his Shawn Green comments 2 years ago he was given a "zero tolerance" sort of final warning, which, as ambiguious as this seems to be, would have violated it.

I guess someone implying they don't want to sit too close to someone else because they speak spanish is pretty offensive to me and a perfect example of racism. Far far worse than things others have been fired for - he basically implied lou might steal his wallet because he was speaking spanish.

Most likely. I don't believe he even issued an apology for that, either.

In searching for exactly what he said, I found something that said he privately apologized to Green.

What did he say about Shawn? (If it's inappropriate for the board, never mind.)

From wikipedia...

Lyons' maligned outfielder Shawn Green, who is Jewish, for sitting out a game on Yom Kippur in 2004. Lyons ripped Green, saying:

"He’s not even a practicing Jew. He didn’t marry a Jewish girl. And from what I understand, he never had a bar mitzvah, which is unfortunate because he doesn’t get the money."

Yeah, but never a public apology, I don't believe.

Here were his comments:

Green is “not a practicing Jew,” Lyons said on air. “He didn’t marry a Jewish girl. And from what I understand, he never had a bar mitzvah, which is unfortunate because he didn’t get the money.”

I think that's alot worse than this current situation

Probably. Without having seen it, it's hard to get a sense of the context and intention. The comments about Green are much more transparent.

Either way, it was enough for even Fox to have had enough with Lyons and his tendancy to offend large groups of people.

Unfortunately, offending people intellectually is still a requirement for any color analyst position on Fox.

It's a lot more direct than what he said in regards to Piniella. The comments on Friday were moreso implied. Both statements are inappropriate, and in seeing the quote on Green again, I'm surprised he wasn't let go at that time. It may have been a warning for a first offense and Friday's comments got him the axe.

I think we should talk baseball here and avoid the political stuff. I could make comments about CNN and MSNBC and CBS and all the other Drive-By media as much as any of you can take cheap shots at Fox News...

I can go other places for the politics...or I can go to the Barber Shop. Lyons is an ignorant fool...along with Jimmy the Greek and Al Campanis...

Leave it at that, so we can discuss how much the Cubs suck...there's plenty of fodder for that !

What Campanis said was classic ignorance. That was something that I've never ever really heard from any human in any medium.

That was actually a situation. This is just over-sensitivity.

I'm just sorry it wasn't Joe Buck.

I hate Bucker. It was so obvious last night that he didnt want to announce the game anymore after the Mets turned the game into a route.
