Why are they going to do that? Take a wild guess...

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-whitesox-7-eleven&prov=ap&type=lgns

This ranks right up there with putting the Spider-Man movie decals on the bases.

Ridiculous.

I think it's actually quite different, and not the least bit ridiculous. It's clever. Movie decals on the bases is in your face obnoxious. This is subtle and unique.

I tend to despise most corporate sponsership . . . but I agree with goony here.

It's clever without impeding the aesthetic (i.e. movie decals) or outlying (i.e. stadium names) appeal of the game.

Seriously, how many times have you said, read, written or thought, 1:20, 3:05, 7:20, etc? And how many times have you saw the time 7:11 and didn't think of the store? I'm just glad there are no games in the Atlantic Time Zone.

"Japan has more 7-Eleven locations than anywhere else in the world, where they often bear the title "7&iHoldings". Of the 28,123 stores around the globe, 10,868 (39%) of them are located in Japan. 1,396 are in Tokyo alone. "

Regardless of it being a few minutes, they're changing the start time of the games to accommodate a sponsor. That's it. There is no inherent benefit to the fans for this change.

I understand that baseball is a business and that it's all about making money, but the game itself shouldn't be changed. That's why it's ridiculous.

The game itself has not been changed. It's ridiculous to suggest it has. They don't require 7 outs or 11 strikes. The game is the same, the start time changed. Big deal. Why does there have to be a benefit to fans to justify any change? It's not like it's harmful in any way.

Hahahahahahahaha, the White Sox are a joke

What, like our "Bud Light Bleachers" are any better?

And this does help the white sox by bringing in more money. Whether it's spent on a player or whatever, it's more money. That does help, right?

I know what you say, but I still think it feels added on, cheap, and tacky.

What's so clever about it?

Please. There is no reason for this change other than to make a few extra dollars because of the connection between the store and the time. It's just another cop out to sponsors.

And why should changes benefit the fans? Maybe because we're the ones who bring in the sponsors. Our attendance and viewership of the games is what brings in money. And as I stated earlier, while it may be a mere six minutes, it's the principle behind why they're doing this.

It's a cheap gimmick for no reason other than for money.

I agree. While the fans aren't beneifted, I don't see them harmed in anyway. Teams already have differing start times. The Cubs start afternoon games at 1:20. Some teams start them at 5 minutes after the hour, others 10, some fifteen. If someone wants to offer them money to make it 11 minutes after the hour, so be it.

I don't see where this is a big deal at all.

Sure we may not like sponsorships. We might think it affects the purity of the game. This doesn't bother me one bit.

Yeah but teams don't name their starting time after a sponser. I guess to each his own.

But I don't see the problem if they do. Start times aren't sacred. I'd rather start times be named for sponsors than stadium names. This is no worse, and actually better, than the Cubs renaming the bleachers, the Bud Light bleachers. I'd rather have the Cubs start night games at 7:11 than to have those dumbass chairs painted in the dugout to sell furniture. So, yea...to each his own.

It's a cheap gimmick for no reason other than for money.

Money which could be used to make the team better or make the game experience better for the fan.

When it comes to rosters, fans complain that there isn't enough money being spent on players. When it comes to advertising/sponsorship, fans complain that baseball is too much of a business.

Major League teams are not non-profit organizations. If they can do something like this to make a little money and not negatively impact the fans, so be it.

Posted

Teams like the Cards and the Twins don't start home games until 7:10. The D'Backs don't start until 7:40. The Giants don't start until 7:35.

I don't see what the big deal is of adding an extra minute. Like Goony said, I think it's a pretty clever deal they have; added extra income for just starting weeknight home games 4 minutes later. Not that bad of an idea at all IMO.

You know, I don't think I'm able to articulate my point clearly enough, so I'm going to bow out. Everyone brings up good points, but I just can't find the right words to clarify mine. And I'm a PR guy. This doesn't bode well.

You don't see a problem with it, but you then you go on to say that those dumbass chairs painted in the dugout to sell furniture. So that bothers you and the 7:11 thing doesn't. I think we have to agree the Cubs gotta be the least team that takes advantage of advertisements.
