ChicagoSports.com[/url]"]The Bears should hear from the NFL soon on a possible suspension for cornerback Ricky Manning Jr., arising out of his no-contest plea to an April assault charge in Los Angeles.

But they have no official word.

"That's how it goes," Smith said. "We assume that when they make a decision, they'll let us know. That will be soon enough for me."

Manning leads the Bears with three interceptions, including one against Buffalo on Sunday, and is tied for second in the NFL. If Manning is suspended, safety Todd Johnson would play as the nickel back.

................

Safety Chris Harris, just back from an ankle injury, left Sunday's game with a pulled quad that could cost him some time. "He pulled it pretty good," Smith said, "so we'll see where that leads us." … Defensive end Adewale Ogunleye and tackle Ian Scott were inactive Sunday with hamstring injuries. Scott is expected to be fine, but Smith isn't sure about Ogunleye. "I don't know if he'll be able to go this week," he said. "We hope he'll be able to. He says he'll be able to."

Let's hope that Manning Jr. isn't suspended. There's not a lot of depth in the secondary with Harris out.

Regarding the secondary, I have a feeling that its (lack of) depth won't tip the scales for the AZ game, and there's a bye-week after that, so as long as Harris is better in three weeks, it should be okay.

Right, but if the NFL hires Bob Watson to hand out the suspension, he'll wait until the worst possible time to do it and give Manning Jr. 6 games.

Hopefully Johnson and Worrell stay healthy on special teams.

Points to the good decisions of concentrating on DBs in the draft.

And that whole just watch Clark become a legitimate threat at TE thing.

Bears won't go undefeated simply because they'll lock up the best record with 2 or 3 weeks left and rest some starters

I don't think you rest starters with a shot at 16-0...

One loss, sure... but if they're still undefeated, I can't see them throwing the second string out there.

Does it matter at all that the charges were dropped on all the other guys for lack of evidence?

Those were just normal dudes who hang out with RMJ. There's no way they dropped the charges because of celebrity. I'm starting to wonder if this whole thing really happened like everyone was so sure it did. If that guy really got a beat down from Manning and his friends, I highly doubt the charges would just have been dropped mid-stream.

Starting to sound more like a DA who is out to get Manning Jr. Once RMJ cops a plea, all of a sudden the case itself evaporates. Maybe there wasn't much of a case to begin with.

I'm not sure I agree. What's better? 16-0 or Super Bowl win?

Both? :)

I'm not saying that I think you should or shouldn't rest the starters. I just don't think they would.

Personally, I might open a can of worms here, but I think 16-0 is more special than a Super Bowl. Teams can get lucky and win the SB. You don't get lucky and go 16-0. Plus, nobody has ever done 16-0.

Does that mean I would enjoy 16-0 with a playoff loss more? Hell no, but IMHO, going 16-0 is a display of dominance and consistency that is unprecedented in NFL history and is a lot more impressive than simply winning the championship, something that is much more luck dependent and that is done every year.

Again, just give me 19-0, and I'll be happy.

To answer your question... what's better? Probably 16-0. What would I rather the Bears do? Win the SuperBowl.

If I had my choice I'd always prefer my defense to be the juggernaut side of the ball, and the offense to be the formerly bad and presently improving side.

How football and baseball are oh so different...

Heh...I actually deleted that post just after posting it, because after typing it out, I wasn't as sure about it..16-0 would be remembered more than a Super Bowl victory I'd think. And knowing this group, they'd want to get it. They really seem to strive for perfection.

16-0 without a SB would be remembered much more bitterly than 15-1 with a SB.

16-0 without a SB would not be all that special.

It wouldn't be nearly as special. But it would be more of an accomplishment than say, 12-4 or 13-3 with a SB, if you ask me.

You're definitely right, though, 16-0 and a playoff (or even SB) loss would definitely leave a really bitter taste.

So if you're coach, and we're going into the Green Bay game with 15 wins...do you rest the starters?

Green Bay will come to Chicago when we're 15-0, and no way the starters rest. If they take a double-digit lead into halftime, then I sit the offensive starters and some of the defensive starters, with the understanding that any threats will result in the whole squad going back out.

16-0 without a Superbowl will definitely be remembered, though dubiously so. There will then have to be a distinction between "undefeated season" and "undefeated regular season." I would rather have 15-1 with a Superbowl, but the season would be more remembered (notorious is a better word) if it were 16-0 with no SB.

You could always make the argument that 3 weeks without really playing would do more harm than good (Week 17, Bye, and the week between the bye and the first playoff game), and that this would outweigh the benefit of not risking injury in one game. It's not like we're playing the last game on FieldTurf or anything.

I'm not sure which side I'm on after last year, when I strongly supported resting the starters. I'm not sure the bye week isn't enough rest. 3 weeks seems like an awfully long time not to be playing.

The Bears 3rd string is better than the Packers, so I would most definitely sit the starters if home field was not an issue.

I don't think the Bears will go 16-0, however. Someone is going to get a game on them. That's my bold prediction. I think I'd actually prefer a loss during the regular season rather than during playoffs. Gotta remember what it's like to lose a game so you can focus on NOT losing when it matters most.

So your bold predicition is they won't become the greatest team (record wise) ever? Quite the boldness there :D

It's hard for me to say I'd PREFER a loss, but I can certainly see the argument that it may be a benefit. That said I don't think we'll be 11-0 and I'll be saying to myself "We could really use a loss right about now."
